Finally got a call back from my powder coating dude… price had jumped :ranting:from $250 to $325 for two 9 inch(front), and two 13 inch(rear) wheels for the Work Horse.

I called another shop… he said $225…

Dropped the wheels off this afternoon after work. Asked him again about the price and he could not remember what price he had quoted me.

I said “Well you tell me again, and I’ll tell you what you quoted me this morning “.

He said “$225”….  I thought Dang !

Then he said “Well, that was a little high.”

So then he said $150, and we agreed on that.

Not bad going from $325 to $150 !

Okay fellows… I may be jumping the gun here, but I call it pre-planning…

I am planning on putting ags on the rear of the Work Horse.

My concern is whether or not they will clear the rear fender/ seat pan, and the mower deck gauge wheels.

They will most likely be 23x10.50-12, as I have not seen any sized 23 x 9.50-12(original, or at least what came off) on the net.

Do any of you that may have more experience with this know if I am likely to have clearance problems with the fenders, or deck wheels ?

Should not be a problem. I put 24 x 9.50 x 12 Carlisle Turf Masters on the 520 they are just a little taller. and 18 x 6.50 x 8 Turf Masters on the front. It tighten up under ther just a little.  Have giggle the deck a little to drag it under.

Full height 25 x 900 x 12 All Trails II get pretty tight. I raised the fender gas tank and fender bracket 1 3/4" on this one.

42 or 48" deck?

Don’t really know… when I brought the Work Horse home I just slid the deck out and to the side.

(I’ll have to measure it)

That is why I said I may be jumping the gun, because I KNEW you guys would be asking, and I figured it would make a difference between a 42” and a 48” deck.

And I’m thinking what you most likely are too… that a 42” deck would be less likely to interfere.

42 has the height adjustment on right side..The 48" is on the left side closed end. Don't take much to interfere with a 42".

Thanks @Lee1977… I need to get out in the shop tomorrow after work and take a quick peak at it.

I appreciate the time you took to share your knowledge.

If I get 23x10.50-12 ags and they interfere with the deck I will be ill !

Do you have wide rims? Generally the 10.5 tires need to be on the wider rear rims. I think standard width rims are 7” or 7.5” and work well for 8.5 and 9.5 rubber. Wide rims are 8” or 8.5” and are better suited for 10.5 rubber.

Thanks for the feedback @Sparky

I guess I will wait until I get the rims back from the powder coating shop and measure the width from bead surface to bead surface.

Then I will know for sure the width.  Others here, I believe, have said the 23x10.50-12 tires should be fine on the Work Horse.

They may have said that considering both fender clearance and deck clearance, but I’m not sure they thought of both.

If it weren’t for ordering on the net and then having the hassle of trying to send them back, I would say I’m overthinking it .

If I were going with turf tires I don’t think it would be an issue (may not anyway), but the “lugs” on the ags have me thinking…

Can’t speak to the ags directly, but this is what I ran into with tire sizes, where the same manufacturer and tire type but different country of origin. May be of use as you evaluate…

Other way around,  wheels, and the adjuster are closer together.  A 48" deck is more forgiving.

Well there ya go… I was assuming with the 42”, the deck wheels would be too “far in” to interfere, but I guess I was looking at it wrong… should have did a test fit before I said that.

Thank you sir… I’ll check it out !

Mike's post is especially true for ag tires. The wide bars are less flexible, so all of the "curve" is typically forced to the sidewall. This makes for some difficult mounting, and the fit is poor if you do by chance get them to lock the bead.

Typically turf tires will allow more equal flex across the tread, so they will mount far better.

Long story short- 10.50 ags really need 8.5 inch wide wheels as a minimum. The only exception I can think of is that many new tires are not actually as wide as the size claims, so some may work out ok.

So today I called the powder coating shop to check on my wheels for the Work Horse…

The guy said I never dropped them off !:ranting:

So it turned out I mistakenly called the guy that was wanting to charge $325…

I apologized and called my guy that is doing them for $150…

I should have them by Friday… will post pics…

Just ordered 2  Hi-Run 23x10.50-12 ags for rear, and 2 Hi-Run 16x6.50-8 straight ribs for the front…

I will post pics when I get them mounted.

Hopefully she’ll be rolling shortly !

Those look awesome!

Now the trick is gonna be to get the tires mounted without chipping the powder coat.

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!

If I can drop the tires and wheels at the Lawn Care Center, I will come back home, paint the gas tank, seat pan / seat bracket cross member, get the transmission topped off with gear oil, and do some other bits here and there…

Then hopefully go back and pick up the wheels…

On my 520H the place I am having it done did not scratch those powder coated wheels… but those were turf tires, not Ags.

Are you saying the Ags may be a tougher sale, and cause their tire machine to damage the powder coating ?

Well, they are a bit tougher to mount, but it really all depends on the skill and care of the guy that's doing the work.

If they use a tire machine? Not likely.
