Horse Newbie 7,075 #303 Posted November 12, 2021 I just walked out to my shop and checked the lug bolts on the 1984 Work Horse GT-1600. They are tapered, and I’m almost certain the 1994 520H lug bolts are too... And on the Work Horse, I dropped a lug bolt in a hole while I was out there... the taper goes completely in the hole and does not fill the hole until the bolt head touches the wheel... Yep, you can see the shiny part just a little ways up the taper where it's contacting the hole in the wheel and not the hub. So after all that, we now know that at least some WH wheels are mounted in the reverse of what we would do with an automobile wheel, judging from the hole bevels, but still use tapered bolts, and...it works just fine! Horse Newbie 7,075 #305 Posted November 12, 2021 Well I may have spoke too soon on the post # 303... as you can see the shiny spot where the lug bolt bites... 5 minutes ago, Horse Newbie said: And on the Work Horse, I dropped a lug bolt in a hole while I was out there... the taper goes completely in the hole and does not fill the hole until the bolt head touches the wheel... As the lugs are tightened up they group of lug nuts as a whole centers the wheel. 1 hour ago, Handy Don said: Also just realized that my spacer idea would likely move the wheel out from the hub to far to permit the center hole to center the wheel on the hub. This is a non issue. I've used 2" and 3" spacers with NO concentric ring so the wheel CAN'T be lined up in the center. I've done this on tractors and road vehicles alike. As I've been reading down through the above posts I remembered that my own 1974 C160 Cinnamon Horse has the same lug holes that appear to be made wrong. I'd also like to note that I use 1/2" studs. Not the stock 7/16". That leaves even less room to align the lug nuts. That tractor weighs as much as 1300 to 1400 lbs. More than double stock weight. I also regularly pull loads of 1000 lbs or more. When I change tires to go from work to shows/get togethers I retorque after an hour or so, and again later. That's a habit from the trucking world. My wheels. Don't. Loosen.
Greentored 3,215 #307 Posted November 12, 2021 This wheel issue is a strange one for sure! I do know those overrated green tractors sometimes run wheels with the deeper dish toward the center, perhaps they came off one of those? FWIW, I installed 1" spacers with 1/2" studs on my off road Horse and had to drill the holes out, losing pretty much all of the taper, and run standard automotive tapered lugs, and have had zero issues. If they're staying put on that thing, believe me, you'll be just fine

I wasn’t too worried about it... just wondered if the wheels were right. The only real concerns I had was those high banked turns at Daytona and Talladega... 1 1

peter lena 8,639 #313 Posted November 12, 2021 @Horse Newbie just noticed your pto cone bearing question , a hi temp anti sling grease should be used , like lucas X TRA HEAVY DUTY CHASSIS GREASE , 560 DROP POINT , ANTI SLING . don,t need much of this , as excess would get on clutch face . also detail lube any related linkage areas , should work very easily , pete
