Achto 27,601 #101 Posted October 12, 2021 (edited) Below is a pic of one of my resto's right after completion. Below that is the same tractor 2 weeks later being put to work. Build her to your liking and enjoy it. Edited October 12, 2021 by Achto 2 5

Horse Newbie 7,075 #103 Posted October 17, 2021 Called my metal man/ blacksmith/ welder/ machinist earlier this week and made an appointment for today to be at his shop. While I was there I had him weld two cracks on my 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 frame. It's where the cross rail at the back of the frame bolts on. I think this is where the seat pan/ rear fender bolts up. Full penetration welds so hopefully it will last another 37 years.
Horse Newbie 7,075 #104 Posted October 17, 2021 (edited) My carb kit for the 16hp twin Briggs that goes on my 1984 Work Horse GT-1600 has not come in yet, but the PO told me there was a carb kit with the goodies he gave me with the tractor. So when I got home from the welding shop I decided to check it out. Sure enough there was a complete unopened kit. So I put my the carb back together...I will have the kit I ordered for a spare. Got my fingers crossed as this is my first carb job...when I refreshed my 1994 520H I bought a China carb, and so far so good. Tomorrow I will paint the intake manifold and try to get the carb put back on the engine so I can see how she runs. Horse Newbie 7,075 #107 Posted October 19, 2021 Sanded on my engine tins for the twin Briggs...tedious work... one almost done, one untouched. I can tell a little difference...
Horse Newbie 7,075 #108 Posted October 20, 2021 Primed the engine tins tonight and painted my flywheel...don't know if it matters or not, but before I painted the flywheel I sanded the light rust off of the edge of the circumference. Also sanded the light rust off of the magnet...then tape over the edge and magnet before painting... Was that the right thing to do ? 5

Was that the right thing to do ? That was the correct choice. When you rebuilt the carb, did you also rebuild the fuel pump? I have found that the fuel pumps on these apposed Briggs will get dry and have issues. Fortunately you have the 3 screw pump so the kit is cheap for yours. B&S OEM # 393397 rebuild kit, should cost under $8.

I believe I ordered the carb kit # 393397 at a local outdoor equipment dealer. I used the free kit , and will keep the carb kit from Briggs as a spare if all goes well will the carb.

I use old bed frames to strengthen that area. 1/8" thick, 2"x 1 1/2" angle steel. 1
Horse Newbie 7,075 #114 Posted October 22, 2021 I painted some of the Briggs twin engine tins tonight...the heat shield coat hanger hanger slipped out of my hand so it will have to be repainted...
kpinnc 12,087 #115 Posted October 22, 2021 Hate it when that happens. I can't remember how many times I've done it myself. Is that an old Yota in the background? Nice!

Horse Newbie 7,075 #121 Posted October 23, 2021 (edited) I had dropped the Briggs twin heat shield in the grass while I was painting it. I tried to sand the areas where dirt had gotten on it and grass had "textured" it, but the fresh paint was not cooperating. So I stripped it with chemical stripper and washed it off. Will repaint the heat shield Saturday... Edited October 23, 2021 by Horse Newbie 1
rjg854 11,382 #122 Posted October 23, 2021 I know how you feel, I had that happen just recently. The paint wasn't dry yet so I wiped it down with Mineral Spirits and repainted it, came out fine.
Horse Newbie 7,075 #123 Posted October 23, 2021 I took the masking tape that was covering the Briggs twin brand decals off... I believe the tins turned out good enough...
Horse Newbie 7,075 #124 Posted October 23, 2021 (edited) I re-primed the Briggs twin heat shield today...will repaint Sunday. Also primed blower housing/ flywheel cover, and the chaff screen. Painted the engine tin bolts... And the engine base plate got primed as well. Edited October 23, 2021 by Horse Newbie
