kpinnc 12,157 #1 Posted October 3, 2021 I used to have an old leather set of welding gloves that actually protected my dang hands. The new ones are junk! Might as well just not use them! Just making a pass about 3 inches from my knuckles and I fried my hand. Good thing no one was looking because I did a dance and song that would have been embarrassing... 2

squonk 41,169 #12 Posted October 3, 2021 In college, I loaned my safety glasses to my roommate. He took welding at a different time than me. He found he couldn't see well with them on along with the welding helmet so he took them off and put them on the shelf under the welding bench. He brought them back to me all melted!

But there is a big difference in a little jig versus full on riverdancing. Just depends on the level of spatter. 1

EB-80/8inPA 1,655 #24 Posted May 6, 2022 My dad was no welder, but he did keep a pair of asbestos gloves in the shed. Try getting your hands on a pair of those these days! His are probably in a landfill in much the same condition as they always were.
Dan.gerous 2,696 #25 Posted May 6, 2022 Mine are OK at keeping the heat out, but useless for trying to work in as no feeling. Try and pick a bit of steel up off the floor, it's almost impossible and usually ends with a glove flung across the room in anger!
