engineguy63 238 #1 Posted October 1, 2021 Just got this 58 rj, MAY have a shot at getting the original clinton engine (P O sold it years back to a friend), but probably a 50/50 shot so may have to get creative. was thinking full paint job, BUT. liking the ratty look from previous posts !!!! 7

Sparky-(Admin) 21,345 #5 Posted October 1, 2021 Leave it alone is my vote….well maybe paint the rims linen beige or black.
Ifixoldjunk 778 #6 Posted October 2, 2021 Well executed patina is always better than a restored paintjob. Just give her a light scruffing with scotchbrite and PB-blaster, and then a coat of tractor supply gloss clear and it'll look great. 1 1

Navajo White is the preferred color 'round here.

Pullstart 62,918 #10 Posted October 2, 2021 I’ve got an old dark green 1054 and love it just the way it is. +1 vote for keep it. A shiny black wheel looks pretty sweet too…

I like that idea, I've been using flood penetrol to wipe down patina tractors but this is a lot more permanent solution. Thanks.

Keep it the way it is! The front axle on that is RARE! The straight beam. According to “straight from the horses mouth” ver 3… Those straight axles were breaking, during heavy use. Elmer Pond went to England (I think) and watched a wheel horse tractor out in the field, pulling a single or double bottomed plow (I think) and the front end was driven right into the ground, and the front axle broke…It was then that Elmer Pond decided to build that “crown” axle that was used till 2007. I think that 700,000 WHs (is that too many WH’s?!) were replaced with the “crown front axle”.
Frankenstein 58 213 #16 Posted October 3, 2021 Clean up the body you will be surprised how it will look. Then paint the wheels. I was shocked how mine turned out. Good luck and have fun with it.
engineguy63 238 #17 Posted October 4, 2021 HHMMMMM, I do like the look of those black wheels on a rattier tractor...........Can anyone confirm its a 58 and not a 59? just curious THANKS
Frankenstein 58 213 #18 Posted October 4, 2021 58 and 59 had the beige wheels but there is always an exception to the rules. It’s your tractor do what you like best its only paint.

Until someone produces an original factory applied serial number ID tag, THEY ARE ALL 1958's production models that were carried over into '59.

The story goes that something like 25,000 58s were built and they carried over into 59, of which only 2500 were built. ...and that is all we know! If true, still pretty impressive for the breakout model at a time when the company was pretty small! Edited October 5, 2021 by kpinnc

WheelhorseBob 1,549 #23 Posted October 7, 2021 Rat rods and patina are all the rage today it would seem. Love a nicely done patina look myself. That being said, this stuff is cyclical. Full blown restoration will be in vogue again if you wait long enough. No wrong choice.
