Suburban transmission 5003 5010 gears

Recommended Posts

flatlndr

Hi all, thought I would take and outside chance that someone would have some differential gears to one of these old side plate trannys laying around.

I've got and old bastardized suburban mold board plow tractor that's been sitting broke in the back of the shed for about  20 years. Loaned it to my brother who hit a root while plowing garden and shelled the tranny. I'd really like to get it going again.

I'm in need of at minimum 2 spider gears part # 3531 and 1 axle gear #3530.The others in the diff might have a couple chips in them but could probably be used.

I know its a long shot but never hurts to ask.

Thanks   Tom B

@flatlndr post some pictures of what you have and need. Actually you should post this in the Classified Wanted section

If you need bushings or bearings or seals one of our vendors Wheelhorse Parts and More had them.

Also Stevasarus our transmission guru has made some videos on rebuilding these transmissions and they are in the Videos Section

@Lane Ranger has posted before, someone made an adapter to put a 2 piece cast transmission in place of a 3 piece side plate trans.

Just so you know, you can use the 5003/5010 transmission pinion gears (I think they are 11 teeth) or you can use the 12 tooth # 4235 pinions...but you need to have 4 of the same.  You cannot mix the pinions.  The #4235 are in the 2 piece, 3 and 4 speed trans.  The axle gear is a different animal.  First go to A-Z Tractors (one of our vendors) to see if he has the axle gear and the pinion (spider gears.).  This is a long thread but it shows work arounds for those 3 piece transmissions.  It would serve you well to look through this thread.  :handgestures-thumbupright:  Let us know what you find or think.  Pay attention to the section on the axle gears... @Racinbob may still have the pieces to make one.

Maxwell - description "spider gear" taken from WH Mechanical Transmission Repair Manual, parts list.

Oliver- I've posted this in both places, hoping someone would have an old differential laying around. Thanks for the tip on bearings and seals. My thumb drive port failed so will have to figure another way to post pics.

Steve......-thanks for the tips and info. I figured this project would be and adventure. I hoped someone had been here before.

Out of curiosity, do you have it apart yet? May i ask how you know its the differential gears? Not doubting you or anything, but curious how you know.

Thanks

Yep, tore down completely. Everything looks good except the diff. spider gears and axle gear. 1st time in one of these trannys. Should have done something with it years ago. Probably would have had more luck finding parts.

Guess I should say that I've been around WH and this forum since it was under the old Yahoo Groups if that doesn't show my age. I still have about a dozen horses so I've had some experience with them. Slowly reducing the inventory so kids don't have to

A-Z has both gears (3531 and 3530) you are looking for.

Ah, but they aren't spider gears and good they are, because that would be a huge weak point.

Well dash##. I had an old 3 speed laying around in the barn.  Thought I would look at the spider gears and see if they would work based on what I read in Stevasaurus thread. No joy in Mudville. Broke open the differential a grenade had gone off inside. Spider gears and axel gear were in a hundred pieces. Looks like A-Z is getting closer to reality or let it sit for the next owner. Hate to spend 100 bucks to get it going.

Thanks all for the help. Will ponder it a little.

Check the-bay from time to time, sometimes old parts pop up for good prices.

I recently picked up 2 pairs of axles + gears for my WH's off there for $75 shipped. One set I needed (current ones have wrecked key-ways), and one set I picked up as a spare for a different transmission.

send me some pics of exactly what you need.  I still have five boxes of rj/suburban transmission parts.  I know I have several sets of spider gears.  The axle gear in differential is what you're looking for?

let me know.

Hope the pics come through ok. Two of the spider gears are completely shredded. One has teeth chewed up and should probably be replaced. The axel gear has two teeth sections completely missing. The other axel gear is salvageable.

Laneranger, I tried to message you but couldn't get pics inserted.

Thanks for any help.

post pics of the gears with the gear teeth face up!  I need the number of teeth??

You have to knock out the roll pins to get the axle gear and Woodruff key off the axle to get it out of the differential.   The gear needs to be face down and photographed.

Sorry about that. The axle gears have 25 teeth and the spider/pinion gears have 12 teeth. Pic of axle gears and the old rig I'm trying to resurrect.

Thanks for checking

Don't chastise me too bad, a Sears 3 point plow mounted on the back of it. The guy that built it did a pretty nice job of putting it together.

Tom looks like you have a real cobbled together Wheel Horse someone made work for them.  I have sent you a pm.  I have four good gears that will work for you.   Three 12 tooth spiders and a 25 tooth axle gear.

You might consider putting the stronger two piece/3 speed transmission in your tractor if you are going to use to plow.  The three piece transmission will work for you but plowing does put a lot of stress on the tractor!

Cobbled is a kind description. Yeah, a 2 piece tranny would be a better option. My welding/fabricating skills are non-existent mounting it up.  I'll be kind to the old rig. Thanks again for all your help.
