1990 520H No Charging Voltage Repair [ VIDEO]

Recommended Posts

Duramax7man7

Hey Gang! I pray that everyone is doing well and staying healthy these days!

Made this video the other day and wanted to share it with my Wheel Horse Crew to help out if anyone needed this. Kind of obvious stuff but there was a time when I skipped over this in my thinking.

Hope it helps! Take care and God Bless!

A DORMAN 85668 Fuse Block can be purchased for as little as $3.03 and it includes all new contacts.

DeOXIT grease would be best on the terminals.

Installing the battery correctly with the terminals front and putting the battery hold down on the front corner might prevent a major short if the hold down slips back or destroys the battery caps.

IMHO the corroded battery terminal wasn't the reason for the fuse block melting.

It's much more likely that there was corrosion on the FUSE TERMINALS.

Heat builds up where there is resistance.  Corrosion causes resistance.

I'm not saying that the battery terminal wasn't corroded, I'm sure it was, but that wasn't the root cause of the melted fuse block.

I find that over time, the fuse contacts lose their tension, so they fail to hold the fuse securely. Time, heat, an overload condition can all contribute to this situation.  It's not just on this particular application, as any automotive style fuse panel can have this condition.  A simple drag test can be used to test the condition of the contacts....you can use a fuse cut in half and test each side individually.  As a matter of fact, I test All connections with a Drag Test, using the appropriate terminal.  I use voltage drop testing methods, then use the Drag Test on the offending circuit.  Very useful in locating the intermittent No Start condition...

Sometimes all that's needed is to unplug and plug in the fuse a half dozen times to clean the connections.

In fact, if I had a 520 it would be a regular preventive maintenance point.
