Cleaning carbon from the valves?

The inside of the intake is exposed to gasoline whenever the engine runs, so no problem with the sealant.  Water will not easily pass thru a small crack, gasoline will act more like penetrating oil and make for a better test.

I see it now. Didn't notice it before. That plus its attached hoses and gauge, do offer another opportunity for air leaks, for sure.

I assumed that gas, being "thinner" than water, would find smaller leaks or big leaks more obviously. @lynnmor many have a comment on this!

since you guys are so generous sharing your encyclopedic knowledge ...here's another realted question to this topic -- when i got the tractor and first started it, I ran it for few minutes and noticed the significant surging at mid throttle. Thus, I began the carb and manifold project....... However, I also noticed the vaccum guage is very erratic and rapidly jumps back and forth from low end to top end ....never settling anywhere. Does that give a glue what the likely surging issue may be? thanks

Get that carburetor cleaned out and make sure that the welch plug just above the idle mixture screw in there.

Be sure the hose connecting to the gauge is heavy enough that the walls are not pulsing with the changes in pressure in the manifold. And of course, no leaks (if you spray a bit of carb cleaner around the hose does the engine react? Keep the cleaner away from the exhaust and do this before the engine is hot.)

The plug has to be there and air/fuel tight in its place. On mine, it's a ⅜" aluminum. Absent the plug, the idle mixture fuel supply is messed up, throwing the carb out of whack so it can never settle on the governor-controlled speed--surging happens.
