Brockport Bill 1,660 #1 Posted September 23, 2021 I took the challenge to rebuild a leaky 416h lift cyl - ordered a hydro lift cylinder O RING repair kit ( $17 ). It was difficult getting snap ring off .... then getting piston rod out... but otherwise learning as i go and making progress. To mirror what i was doing I removed a second leaky 520HC lift cylinder therafter and looked at them side by side..................... I had planned to replace the O RINGS side by side for the two cylinders. I would have guessed as a NEWBIE to these type repairs that lift cyl were same and interchangable????? They are NOT the same. There is a large spacer piece in the cyl that came from the 520 HC that would appear to shorten the travel distance of the piston rod??? I actually planned to do a couple other cyl from a couple other WH I recently got. But now I am confused. Are there different lift cyls for different models? Do I have to be sure I replace each cyl back onto the exact tractor I removed it from? Are there different cyl model #s ? I looked at the diagrams online and they appear to be the same without that spacer? Any help and insights would be helpful - many thanks !!!!!!! Last thought - could there be a chance this one with spacer had the spacer added - or perhaps the one without had a spacer removed? 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Handy Don 12,170 #2 Posted September 24, 2021 (edited) I have seen differences in the "throw" of at least a couple of different models' cylinders. My guess was that the design of the rock shaft (or the arm on it) varied and having the cylinder force it beyond its planned movement would be unhelpful! The thing to measure is the actual center-to-center span between the mounting holes when the cylinder is retracted and extended and compare these to the on-tractor mounting locations over the range of the rock shaft motion. Brockport Bill 1,660 #4 Posted September 24, 2021 yikes - thanks for the time and effort to send along - that's amazing info --- lots of variations - I wonder what the difference is internally on the cylinders you show --- If you look at the two photos I display, the 520 HC has that spacer? Coincidentally, my cyl from the 520HC is 8 3/4 inches, with an internal spacer of 3/4 inch, and the 416H cyl is 8 inches with no spacer - thus, minus the 3/4 inch spacer they are "equal".
