Pullstart 62,911 #1 Posted September 10, 2021 I work. Sometimes I go to work, sometimes work is home. As @WHX?? says, Mrs. P is the bread winner. I am surrounded by girls. This winner bread, every time I go to make a sammich, somehow magically shrinks but the butt never leaves the bread bag. Our German kid Jil suggested that the butt is meant to stay there until the end to keep the loaf fresh. I argue that’s the reason for the bag. It’ll never be solved… see the statement of being surrounded by girls. I’m sure I’m the wrong one… but I’ll never admit it to them!
Handy Don 12,235 #2 Posted September 10, 2021 Learn to like the ends (sometimes called the "heel"). I did. 1

8ntruck 7,016 #4 Posted September 10, 2021 The heel is the best part of the loaf of homemade bread. 2

I do firmly believe that I have no such thing as an "acquired taste". I either like something, or I don't. I've had multiple people tell me over the years that wine is an acquired taste. A WHUT??? My thought is, WHYYY in the world would you force yourself to consume something that you don't like so that you can force yourself to begin to like said item? Now back to the OP issue... The heel of factory produced bread is meant to be sacrificed to the birds outside. It has NO known usage involving human consumption. Our friend Jennifer would fervently debate that I am incorrect. She too, is crazy. That, she will admit. Where do you commence to construction of a sammich, semmich, or sangwich, the first thing that you should do with the heel that you find obstructing the bag is remove said heel and magically turn it to a frisbee in whatever direction is the most convenient to you. I will concede to Bill's point above that homemade heels are substantially better than factory made heels. Now as to you @pullstart being right or wrong, well quite frankly you're outnumbered by several to one and it just doesn't matter. 1 2
Pullstart 62,911 #6 Posted September 10, 2021 Butts. Heels. Whatever. I’ve never been one to toss good food to the birds… With so many said children here, and little monsters (nieces) we have enough food waste for 15 chickens to survive.
CCW 1,295 #7 Posted September 10, 2021 Well I do enjoy a heel occasionally. The end of the loaf is good too, at times. I have found that I am often wrong on an issue. When asked what do I think I reply, "What are your thoughts on this sweetie pie?" Either I get her real answer of a proverbial dope slap.

The best advice I can offer is: When in communication with a female and she answers any statement or question with a chuckle.... Abort. Mission. Immediately. 1

SylvanLakeWH 25,600 #11 Posted September 10, 2021 Only question you should be asking: Does that bread butt make my look fat?
JoeM 7,874 #12 Posted September 10, 2021 Okay, next question. What do you do with stale bread? That is if someone eats the heel or leaves the bag open. Make French Toast! Is there German toast? 3 1

Yossarian 208 #14 Posted September 10, 2021 Around here the front heel usually gets eaten and the last one goes stale in the bag. In my attempt to not raise picky eaters I've turned the heel side down on sandwiches and simply said "deal with it" . Then I made my sandwich with the good pieces. Sometimes, if I catch the last piece before it goes moldy I put some olive oil and herbs/ spices on it and toast it. Homemade croutons. They rarely make it to a salad, they often get snatched out of the toaster oven before I can get to them. 1

So, in reality it is not being wasted, just converted to chicken feed. Face it, you are outnumbered and will never win if they all gang up on you, just think of them as hot dog buns.

Beap52 815 #17 Posted September 11, 2021 Somehow my father in law got his kids to believing that because there were only two heels on a loaf of bread that they were a treat. My wife still prefers the heel especially when toasted. Works for me! 2
8ntruck 7,016 #18 Posted September 11, 2021 Growing up, mom used to make garlic toast with the heels. Slice each heel into 4 pieces, butter, garlic salt, then into the broiler until crisp. 2

RandyLittrell 3,884 #23 Posted September 12, 2021 Hated the heel growing up, but loved to toast it when I got older! We don't have bread in house anymore, but have to have a sammich every once in awhile! Randy
