How to put more tension on a drive belt?

I was wondering how to put more tension on a drive belt 

 

 

In this picture is that how you can adjust the clutch thing to get more tension

Hi Jacob,

 

it looks like you’re working on a B or C series, based on the brake rod.  That spring in the photo is all the tension you should need.  If you feel like it’s worn out, you might find what you need at a hardware store… just bring the old one in with you.  If your belt is still slipping, it may just be time for a new belt.

If you want more traction for off-roading besides you pulley drills. Don't know if more tension is the answer.

 replacing that spring with a stronger one will give you more tension

Jacob you can do that two different ways. You can get a new Toro spring part number 108035 on the internet for anywhere between $12 and $20, shipped.

You can also add a spring around the outside of that one without too much interference.

 

I've done both.

 

My version of off-roading is not like mud runs or anything but we have very rough terrain and I pull some pretty heavy stuff so I wanted good grip.

No, the spring is all that provides the belt tension.       The lever does look to be pretty far to the rear which would cause the spring to lose rotational torque on the shaft.

Check the roll pin that fixes the lever to the shaft. It may have sheared allowing the lever to move on the shaft.

If the roll pin is OK, A new belt may be required.

 

The position of the trunnion on the threaded rod only adjusts the position of the brake pedal.

I have a 74 c160 which is fairly similar to your tractor. I pull well over a thousand pounds up out of the forest on steep up hills half a dozen times a year or more and my belt NEVER slips.

 

Do you know when's the last time your belt was replaced?

Are you popping the clutch or shifting gears while the tractor is moving?

pulling??  as in tractor pulls???  The belt is made to slip a touch, that is the safe guard to not break the transmission.  Do not put belt dressing on the belt or the pulleys, you will not be able to shift without grinding the gears.

It's possible that the belt itself is your problem although your spring certainly does look like it needs to be replaced.

Some of us have favorite brands of belt just like any other thing. There's no denying that a Toro wheel horse belt is about the best you can get by size and shape and correct friction surface.
