Big XI 60 Anti Scalp Wheel / Shaft Repairs

Recommended Posts

Worked on the 60 inch deck off of the 522xi. Anti scalp wheels shot and shaft worn out. It is amazing how that plastic wheel wears the metal shaft.

I used an aftermarket wheel that came with a sleeve from 3/8 to 5/8". I eliminated the sleeve and used 5/8 grade 5 bolts for new shafts. Thinking maybe that deck is just to heavy for the 3/8" bolt.

Hoisted her to remove wheels.

Cut down along the vertical shaft.

Then cut down along angle support.

Grind off the excess remaining weld and knocked out the worn stub.

Took a 5/8" x 6 bolt, cut to length, jiged it up, squard and welded.

A little paint installed a new wheel and voila! Good as new! Last another 25 years.

Nice Save!!    That style wheel is used a lot on the Golf Course Equipment I service.  When we get OEM wheels, many times they have a boss cast near the center, that can be drilled for a grease fitting.   You are correct, it is amazing that that much heat develops, to wear the metal shaft.  So at least with a way to lube the wheels, they do last longer........IF they get greased!!!!

@JoeM nice save on that !  agree with @Jayzauto  on the heat issue , answer  for that ?  LUCAS XTRA HEAVY DUTY , POLYUREA  RATED , 560 DEG , ANTI SLING CHASIS GREASE , Walmart $ 5 . switched over to this on all my problem areas , like deck spindle bearings and the same pto mule  bearings , remove side shields , pocket screwdriver , wipe out existing" grease "  install lucas grease , no noise or failures , lots of hours , it works , pete

Especially when they want this for a new one!  $157 up to $243, (i think they been smoking something) I got $2 bucks and a half hour of time in the repair.
