Sparky-(Admin) 21,318 #1 Posted September 3, 2021 Found this 867 for sale an hour from home. Original owner, came with paperwork and a bucket of spare parts, old belts etc. Also new in a canvas bag were tire chains bought for it but never installed. On the ad I could see it was original paint, but when I arrived the elderly gentleman thought he had done me and the tractor a huge favor and shot the top of the hood and fender pan with rattle can red . The new paint is only a week or two old and wasn’t painted onto the decals. I’ll be looking for thoughts on getting it off if you have any. Obligatory pics… 5 9

JCM 9,166 #5 Posted September 3, 2021 Nice find. What are the chances you may be going on a trail ride in Maine next Saturday. 2

Oooo, teasing me with a trail pic are ya! Chances are very good for a trail ride. Some work travel came up that was close to screwing up a northern trip…but not close enough. 1

squonk 41,118 #10 Posted September 3, 2021 3M Microfinishing Compound and a buffer. Then Meguiers Swirl remover. Once you get his paint off you may see why he painted it and wish you left it.

Sparky is the old paint surface rough under the new paint or does the new paint look okay as far as smooth surface and shine?
Maxwell-8 4,275 #12 Posted September 3, 2021 I have removed paint off paint with a claybar, it was more of a mis-spray then a full on spray but worked great in that occasion. Do like the tractor, nice score!

I’m good with blemishes

Achto 27,574 #15 Posted September 3, 2021 (edited) @Sparky Try some Easy-Off oven cleaner. We used it in the body shop to remove painted on lettering from fleet vehicles. Try a small spot first, spray it on, leave it for 10min or so, new paint should wash right off. Edited September 3, 2021 by Achto 3
Herder 2,354 #16 Posted September 3, 2021 Quote I would wet sanding first, if your not happy you can try some other suggestions. You could always drive her through the brush, a few scrapes and scratches and she will look 50 years old again.

Zeek 2,286 #25 Posted September 5, 2021 Now THAT is a great score! That tractor is awesome the way you got it!. If the spray paint is still fresh (I see you posted Friday) Toluene or Xylene should take it off without ruining the original paint. Especially if he shot it with Rustoleum, That takes a long time to fully cure. If that doesn't work, I'd wet sand it with 320 until you get to the original. Then depending how shiny you want it, go finer from there and hit it with polishing compound. I use this three stage compound. If you dry sand it you risk messing with the original paint in that it may put in deeper scratches than you can get back out with the thickness you have to work with. I hate half-@$$ rattle can jobs 2
