8ntruck 7,016 #2 Posted August 30, 2021 (edited) to the forum. Lots of good folks here. Many have had trials and tribulations with steering wheel removal, and will be along soon to share stories. I've not had an occasion to remove a steering wheel, but the basic method is using good penetrating oil between the wheel and shaft, patience for the oil to work, and applying enough force to remove the wheel in a manner that does not damage it. Many methods of applying force have been used, depending on the tools and equipment at hand and if no damage to the steering wheel was a requirement or not. Some models use a roll pin to hold the steering wheel on. You might want to check the hub of your steering wheel below the spokes to see if yours has one or not. Did I mention that penetrating oil and patience are the main tool? Successfully removing a steering wheel and rear hubs are two rites of passage to becoming a true Wheel Horse master. Good luck in your quest to becoming a Wheel Horse master. Edited August 31, 2021 by 8ntruck
pacer 3,173 #3 Posted August 30, 2021 Ah, the dreaded 'steering wheel removal' -- as 8N mentioned the steering wheel and axle hubs are the nemesis of us horse lovers! I'm not familiar with the 268 model, but when you say that it had a nut on it, then that makes me think of a few other models that had a nut and the wheel was on a splined shaft. If that is the case then a puller will almost certainly be needed and youre not likely to have one. Its called a 'Clam Shell' puller, and most of the auto parts houses will rent one. However -- as I mentioned not being familiar with yours, wait a bit and some one will be along to verify this. or describe a different method. 1
