peter lena 8,588 #1 Posted August 29, 2021 did a lawn cut yesterday, highest setting , constantly crisscrossing previous cuts , after rain last night , loaded 200 lb on my lawn spiker , with a softer lawn , it really responds to more holes in it , and the birds following me , eating all the worms ! something i regularly do , with a lighter weight just to break up any grass build up . other checks include , trans oil check , ok , top up fuel with ,STABIL gas treatment , did a quick polish wipe down , back in shed , oil check ok . ready for next cutting . pete

peter lena 8,588 #3 Posted August 29, 2021 @8ntruck using star wheels , normally tow my smaller one while cutting , little weight , bigger one 48" , with 200 lb on it on soft soil , really helps out . pete
Ed Kennell 38,030 #4 Posted August 29, 2021 Wet Lawn Spiking. Duh, my eyes read that but my ancient brain saw Wet Lawn Sprinkling. After reading Petes first post, I wondered why is he sprinkling a wet lawn after a rain
pfrederi 17,680 #5 Posted August 30, 2021 Still have my tow behind plug type aerator I used in Virginia years ago. Tried it once up here about 18 years ago. all it did was bounce off the rocks hardly any penetration. Still somewhere down in the barn....
peter lena 8,588 #6 Posted August 30, 2021 @pfrederi that's my reason to weight my spiker on softer soil, much easier penetration , don't have any rocks , but do have a clay based soil , that tends to dry out quickly , so I get after it when its the most beneficial time. pete
pfrederi 17,680 #7 Posted August 30, 2021 Clay is what fills in the gaps between the rocks...
lynnmor 7,302 #8 Posted August 30, 2021 I was given a spike aerator and it turned out to be an expensive waste. I bought and waited several months for one spike, two wheels and some spacers. So I sandblasted as needed followed by painting. Then I assembled the thing with a white tire on one side and a black one on the other, the spike wheel was of a different design. Once assembled, there is no way to hook to the low drawbar of a Wheelhorse, so I still need to fabricate a tongue for the stupid thing. Now I know why the previous owner had the common sense to get rid of it.
