All funny stuff but in reality it has nothing to do with today's world or current events. Today they are basically used as decoration although they are really efficient at their intended purpose. Here it may seem primitive and archaic but they were still used when I was a child at a time and place where we did not have all the amenities , comfort, and convenience of today's world that really have spoiled us and make us oblivious as to where we came from or who we really are . Most households had at least one, my grandparents homes being some of those. I fondly remember using them and watching family members use them also.It is  thousands of years old in design and functionality and, essentially although there is no need for it now it will never lose its functionality, a testament to the cultures that first used it. With some luck you may be able to find a photo of one or similar on line but I seriously doubt that there will be a description of how it's used and how it worked although that is ridiculously simple. It is a simple fired clay vessel without any glazing inside or out. It is prominently displayed here in my house next to the other numerous artifacts such as yokes, tools whether woodworking or agricultural or otherwise but all related to my culture, upbringing and general love and interest for how life used to be.

Oh! So my quip about the portable pee pee was sorta right on!  I actually didn't think that was it!

 

Wouldn't it absorb the liquid and get nasty in time?  Kinda like terra cotta flower pots that seem to 'filter' the minerals out and deposit on the surface?

 

I find that empty windshield washer bottles work well, but watch out for the sharp edges on the lip!

32 oz. "Dome Beer" cups worked quite well on the NYS Thruway on the way back from Syracuse lacrosse games!

It has nothing to do with the many suggestions given. Inside the home at night for that there was a chamber pot if one was too lazy to go outside to the outhouse. That pot was always glazed for the obvious reasons. While traveling or working in the fields there was always a convenient spot to be found. There was never a need to literally fit 5 lbs of stuff in a one pound bag. LOL

On right track but not humidifier. Think of all the clues given such houses without modern day amenities.

Definitely. Clay has many beneficial qualities. Think simple living using resources at hand and qualities proven literally over thousands of years of usage. Humidification and filtration are not exactly associated with simple living specially in a home without modern conveniences. Necessity is a more important factor to concentrate on.

I remember reading that in the old west they used to use clay as a cooling device for water. I saw that this one appears to be porous so I dismissed that. Thanks for posting that link. It explains it better.

Correct. There was no running water in my grandparent's houses. Water was transported from the well to the the house in jugs which held approximately four gallons.It was a job that had to be done several times per day well not being very close. It was done typically by the women carrying one jug on their heads and another one in each hand. That alone was a sight to appreciate, not only for the balance  but for the sheer strength it took. Water then dedicated to drinking was put in these clay pots dedicated to that. The small mouth was typically covered with a cork to prevent evaporation through it only allowing it through clay therefor cooling and maintaining water cool. Same vessel was also taken to the fields to keep the water cool there and to be used for drinking, hence the small spout. There was no bottled water LOL.

Clay was readily available virtually everywhere so the material was a no brainer.In every village or region there would be several "potters". It was an important indispensable profession since most vessels were made of clay. Plastic was virtually non existent then. Metal containers were used but for a function like this they would taint the water. They were however used to bring the water from the well. Clay also unlike the human body is alkaline therefor being beneficial to it from the minerals and vitamins leached into water stored in it. Clay will also absorb contaminants purifying the water.

 

Much to be learned from the old ways. Here we are drinking from plastic bottles perhaps at one time exposed to serious heat leaching chemicals into the water and not knowing exactly what kind of water is in them. We refrain from drinking from the tap when most times it is better water. I am a serious aquarium fish enthusiast and have many times tested bottled water . Care to be disgusted?

That requires gravity or / and pressure to be accomplished. Unless you stand on your head and have a willing assistant it may prove to be an exercise in futility. You also cannot squeeze pot to create pressure.
