wh5208speed 645 #1 Posted August 18, 2021 I have found a Kohler Magnum I am considering repowering my 520 with. Does anyone know if this crankshaft would work? 1 & 1/8 (diameter) by 3 & 1/2 (length) I always thought it needed to be be 3 & 3/4" length Thanks Thad
slim67 2,735 #2 Posted August 18, 2021 The HH100 that was on my Raider 10 was 1-1/8 too. I am not sure but I think it is something to do with the PTO? Most engines I’ve worked on are usually 1 inch diameter or less( 3/4 and 5/8)

Most engines I’ve worked on are usually 1 inch diameter or less( 3/4 and 5/8) Ooops sorry I was eating a piece of cheesecake and focusing on that too much. I remember the Tecumseh shaft was about 3-3/4 too. But as I said earlier, most engines I see are 1 inch by 3 inch so again I don’t know if that’s a wheel horse spec thing or not. There’s somebody here that will know the answer.
JAinVA 4,619 #4 Posted August 18, 2021 (edited) The 1/4 inch length in the shaft difference will not be an issue. The PTO sleeve won't know ,or care. Going from Onan to Kohler will require a different belt length for an 8 speed. Edited August 18, 2021 by JAinVA
wh5208speed 645 #5 Posted August 19, 2021 Do all Kohler Magnums have the thrust bearing washer? If not, how can you tell if they do?
JAinVA 4,619 #6 Posted August 19, 2021 Kohler single cylinders have ball bearings supporting the cranks so no thrust washers are needed.
pfrederi 17,741 #7 Posted August 19, 2021 Twin Cylinder Magnums did NOT have ball bearings, and only a very few had Thrust bearings.
WheelHorse520H 708 #8 Posted August 20, 2021 Personally I would keep the Onan, if you maintain it properly it will run forever. I have 650+ hours on mine and just finished a decarbon tear down. The starter is iffy though I think I have a kink in the wiring. But that’s probably my fault not the engine’s. They are easy enough to get parts for even though they can get pricey. If you do repower keep the Onan. You can have a backup incase you blow a rod or something. Many of the Cummins Onan RV generators use the same parts. Again that’s just my opinion.
