Tomb Of The Unknown Hub

Recommended Posts

WHX??

Well that's what it may come to a hub it comes to my shop!

So go to pull a new 220 volt line to the new shop AC and the power box is in the corner by the press and I notice this hub for a 953 sitting on it.

Now I got some tractors sitting in pieces in the shop but I don't recollect a 953 being one of them.

Ok whats this for or better yets whose i?!??

After much :confusion-confused: It finally dawns on me that @953 nut gives me a bag of crap at the BS to put a new key way in!

Well duh maybe that's why it was sittin on the press. Never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer!

You'll be happy to know Richard I sat down right then and there and giterdone!

I only had it what since what June?

Took a whooping 5 minutes!

Sides it beat climbing in a very hot attic and rolling in fibergla$s. :angry-screaming:

Goes to show how long I seen this corner of the shop.

Gotta blame it on @Achto and all his stupid tractor shows just about every weekend. Yah my garage starting to look like his!

Hope I didn't set your project back by years Dick!

Came out good tho Richard. I put the new keyway in line with the back set screw figurin a guy could put a new set screw  in line over the back one.

Hub was pretty messed up  too....awful hard on the equipment ain't we Mr. Schmidt ?!?!?:teasing-poke:

'pose you gonna tell us you got it that way! :ychain:

Let me know if you want that set crew put in ...I'll get at it next year....

Did a hub keyway yesterday took a bit longer have to move the press bed halfway through each pass and mine is a manual pump job....but the outcome is good...

I got that down pat Paul. I have a set of different length rods that I use for a cheater extension. so the apron stays put. This one threw me abit 'cause of the extra hub length.

Cheater Rods ...excellent idea!! not having to move the bed up and down would make it easier.  Thank you !!!

Yeah got tired of moving the bed up and down.... even better idea is @prondzy has got the same press and he rigged up a winch of sorts to move the apron up and down. Pic Mike???

The cheaters don't  have to be much, mine are just old scrap 3/4 round stock but 3/8 would work.  Found out with these longer hubs the broach has to be pushed down past the bushing so a longer 1/4 bolt worked perfect.

Don't worry about the messy garage. You'll have plenty of time to clean it when you stop paying for my SS and retire. Then your nephew Kevin will be paying for yours.

Hope I didn't set your project back by years Dick!     No problem, I haven't been able to get any work done for months. Between my wife's broken ankle and dealing with my brother's estate I haven't had much time for "MY STUFF". Both situations are working out well so I should be able to make some progress soon.    :text-thankyouyellow:

Thanks Jim, you are the best. Let me know how much the shipping is.

" New Shop AC" It sure was nice of the town dentist to leave that old " window shaker " at the curb. He knew the Mafia would be doing a drive by. How are the little rubber extension thingy's? You can get some red duct tape to seal any tears! :)

Shoulda said something Tom I gave the old mini split to Massey Jason. You wouldn't have wanted it tho it ran on R-22 so he didn't get much. I might have another replacement  coming so next tear out is yours.

None of that window shaker stuff here Squonky .... mini split tear out that was savable. New one is a nice Fujitsu runs on R410a and is a heat pump to keep them plow day campers out there comfy. Now you know why I can't retire just yet....too many job bennies.

Will do Richard.... PM me your addy again case I can't find it. I am going to look for a milling bit that will work in a drill press to put them neat flat spots on for the lock nut.

Your :text-welcomewave:

You machinists out there think something like this would work for putting those flat spots on? Keep in mind I don't have a nice mill like Tom just a drill press!

Cheap enough for the hobbyist.

10 pcs 4-Flute End Mill Bits, AFUNTA 0.08" - 0.47" HSS CNC Straight Shank Drill Bits Cutter Tool Set for Wood Aluminum Steel Titanium: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

I would probably go with an interchangeable counterbore

Probably a 3/4" counter bore would give the end mill a secure place to start out.     :confusion-confused:   The mill may want to wander on a tapered round cast surface.      :twocents-02cents:

Like these ?

@JPWH sent me some mills I am going to try on a scrap 520 hub. Even if they don't work I see a dozen uses for these.

Thank you Jay! :bow-yellow:

Those are very nice but I was considering a simpler solution. I was thinking that after the 5/16" pilot hole is drilled  a standard 3/4" HSS bit drilled down a short distance would give the end mill a place to ride without wondering.
