Daron1965 644 #1 Posted August 12, 2021 Do any of you have hit n miss engines? I have always been very interested in them. I have a chance to buy a late 20s Maytag 92. It has been refurbished, but not repainted. Are they a good little engine to get into the addiction. Lol. Any info would be helpful. Thank you, Daron
lynnmor 7,561 #2 Posted August 12, 2021 It is a very simple 2 stroke engine, not a true hit or miss that skips power strokes to regulate speed. Replacement parts seem to be available and the engine has very few parts.
Pullstart 64,536 #3 Posted August 12, 2021 @Stepney has some Maytag stuff it seems… I enjoy washing those old buggers run…
Stepney 2,351 #4 Posted August 12, 2021 Did someone say Maytag?? Haha.. they're a lot of fun, but many an old farm boy will tell you 'He learnt to swear watching his ma try to start the washer on a cold or wet morning'. They are hit and miss in the sense they are spark governed, but they do not coast like a traditional 4 cycle farm engine would. And they waste a lot of fuel doing so being a 2 stroke.. Wrote you a bit of a lengthy PM before seeing this post.. but yeah, if it's running and in decent knick, hard to go wrong with a 92. Mine has been very nearly trouble free since it's overhaul.

ClassicTractorProfessor 5,366 #6 Posted August 12, 2021 Love the sound of an old Maytag single running. I bought my first one back in May at a Steam and gas engine show we went to. I will warn you they are very addictive, after buying my short frame 92 at that show, I have since added two long frame 92s and a 19 to the collection. One of my long frames is a 1927 model, it’s currently torn down on my workbench undergoing a complete restoration as time and funding allows. The other long frame turns over but haven’t messed with it enough to know what it needs, and the Model 19 is locked up. Parts are fairly easily obtained. Just do a quick eBay search and you will probably find anything you may need.
