875 Engine Swap

So I picked up this one month's ago. Got it cheap and it came with a mowing deck and a plow. The bad news was that the engine was no good. When I got it home I realized that it was too nice to part out. I put  new steering wheel on it and replaced the tires so I could roll it around. @squonkwas nice enough to pick up a 8hp engine for it at the Big Show. Neither of us has seen it run yet but hopefully it won't be long. During disassembly of it I can see there are a few teeth missing on the pinion gear for the steering. So I am looking for that gear. Make sense to replace it while it is all apart. So when I get that fixed I can put the replacement engine in. Advice on that small steering gear replacement???

Having the engine out really doesn't make replacing that gear any easier. There is a bushing on the shaft near the top with an Allen screw. Loosen that and slide the bushing down the shaft. The shaft will now lift off. The gear separate may be hard to find. They welded them later on . If you find a whole shaft you have to remove the steering wheel. Why did you pull the head off of the old engine? Don't lose anything! Could have left all the tinwork on it too.

I pulled the head after I got it to see if the valves were stuck. That's when I knew the piston wasn't moving. If anyone has one of those gears or a shaft let me know. I will try AZ or KB.

Those complete shafts should be a dime a dozen. You already did the hard part removing the steering wheel

Congrats on getting the steering wheel off! I've been going to replace that gear, along with the sector gear on my C-160 with parts from @ebinmaine and @squonk for a year or two now. Been dreading the steering wheel removal and have been soaking it every other day for about a month. Saw you asking about replacing the gear and decided that I'd stop procrastinating and have a try at it.. Roll pin still wouldn't hammer out, so I gave up on that and ground the weld off with the shaft still in the tractor. Only casualty that resulted was my cheap Chinese ignition switch - the shock from hammering on the roll pin caused the guts to shoot out of the switch.

 

Don't mind my ugly welds. Huge improvement on how it steers. Good luck with yours!

Take a good look at the steering support block hole when you get the shaft out. It may be wallowed out.

When I replaced the steering wheel I just took a cut off wheel and hacked away at it. I couldnt get it to budge using a BFH or gear puller. I did not put a roll pin back in I just used a nut and bolt.

Well fought with the 875 a little today. Tried to remove the steering gear. The roll pin came out easy. The gear turned nice and easy. The collar bushing was not turning at all. Had to cut it out. The gear popped right off. You can see wear the tooth is missing. After that we took off parts off the old engine that I will need for the new one. Then took the oil pan off to see inside. Kinda like picking a booger and looking at it before you flick it. No surprise as to what happened. Broken rod. So @squonkit's yours if you want it !!

Yup I want it. Trying to piece another engine together. I see about coming up to get it in the next couple of weeks. :banana-wrench:

I don't know what's usable. I took a lot of what bolts on the outside. You know I have 2 more engines that need looking into so I don't know what I will be needing for them. When ever you are out this way. The remains of the engine is in my garage now. I also have a new project that will be arriving soon. A friend of my cousin wants me to pick up a Case 224 from his place. You know the story.... ran when he parked it... but for free I will go get it. Has a rototiller and a snowblower attachment. More on that if I ever get it.

What I NEED are: 

 

The camshaft thrust washer

 

The Flywheel. I had to use a flywheel off of one of these engines on the one I sold you.

 

The block.

 

Looking at the damage to your piston and where the rod broke there is a good chance the block is damaged too along with the crankshaft. Whether or not I will have to tear it all down and inspect everything. All that would be left is the cam and valve train and governor parts. I would put what's usable in inventory and if you needed anything you can have it back

I am going to need the pulley and screen that bolt to the flywheel too. I had to use them on your engine also.

A point of clarification- all of these have slightly egg shaped holes to hold grease. It's very minimal, but it's also where the play in the steering starts.
