K91 shaft play?

Recommended Posts

Today I set up another K91 that I had here for many years for the first time.  Started immediately and runs really nicely. However there are two things with it perhaps related. It is pretty tight when pulling the starter. Also there is a bit of play when pulling crank back and forth. Any thoughts about those two issues ? Any downsides to using it this way?

End play spec is .004- .023" You have way more than that. I would think the bearings are shot and that would also account for the rope being hard to pull. See if you have up and down movement as well.

No  other play. Just what is shown.

Could the ACR (Automatic Compression Release) not be functioning? Just thinking out loud here. :confusion-shrug:

I wonder if you could do a compression test. I don't know what the compression would be, if in fact the ACR was not working. Maybe some one else does.

You need to open that up Cas. Pull the pan. Either the bearings have slop between the inner and outer races or the outer races are moving back and forth in the plate and rear bearing boss.

There is no ACR on a K-91

I was told by a wise old man when I was a young man “Where there’s smoke there’s fire.” And “Pay me now or pay me later” Both statements have rung true numerous times over my life.

That’s not a “bit of play”

Too much play. Yes they are related.
I personally would not run it until it’s repaired.

Time for a tear down.

Thank you guys . That’s what I thought. I’ll probably open the pan to see what it is. Don’t need to get too deeply into it  right now. Fortunately I can just pick another one off the shelf.I was curious about this one since I had never started it before. It actually looks to be one of the oldest ones here.

Please post an update if/when you put the pan. I have 2 K91's to get work on/get running.

While I come across 8-16 hp K Series, K01's seem elusive around here!

Will do. The little guys are becoming really scarce. I been grabbing every single one I came across for some years now. Plenty of them here.
