Tape measures are among the cleverest tools for disappearing, for sure.

Last year I got a Bosch laser measuring device, since I've been measuring up building interiors to do floor plans and guide construction work. What a nifty tool.

With the exception of having to measure anything over  8 feet , wood  rulers are it here. I also occasionally use an 8 footer but they are not easy to fit in pocket so the 6 footers are used.  They are more precise and versatile than tape measures. Measurements can be taken with them that are not possible to do correctly with tape measures. For checking squareness on cabinets , cases or to obtain precise ceiling heights I use a 10 foot sliding ruler or it’s smaller brother.

When joints get sloppy they are done, no longer accurate.

When I was a young man and I measured something previously measured by my mentor and complained that it was a 1/16” or 1/8” different than he measured he took out his ruler opened totally and hit the end on floor then measuring again. He would then smile and say” that is it kid you are right!”  folding it back up and putting it in his pocket. In all of those years he never changed it. The markings in the first six inches on both ends were basically all gone but he was just too attached to it. I loved that man and think of him every day.

  I'd just like to mention. When I was at school a good few years back and when I started my apprenticeship. It was drummed into me that rulers, ruled countries etc. A rule was for measuring.
