WHATIZIT FOR??

Recommended Posts

formariz

Been in a bit of a rut here so I need to get myself out of it.  Here is a challenging one. Digging deep in the arsenal I came up with this one. It is a plane obviously and it is user made . Overall shape and design of plane is unique since it is user made. The results of its application however is something that most of us older folks with knowledge of traditional arts should be familiar with. Can we come up with it’s intended function?

I love the look of that plane !!  :occasion-xmas:  It looks like it will cut a 45 degree bevel like on a table top, or coffee table, etc.  :greetings-wavingblue:  Possibly, a picture frame of mirror frame edge.

What is the orientation of the iron to slot in the sole and the opening in the back of the plane?

Maybe it is used to peel 1/2 inch wide strips of veneer off of a plank?

Would that be for planeing the splats on the back of old chairs?

Fitting cabinetry or shelving together?

Big hint! Although a wood plane end result has nothing to do with cabinetry or joint fitting. Think of old old times.

LOL. Interesting little tidbit of information on cabinet makers rulers only. In the US they read right to left. Our friends’s across the pond they read left to right. This only happens on cabinet maker’s rulers and not carpenter’s rulers . Those read left to right on both sides of Atlantic.

Slot is the throat where shaving comes out.

Are the strips for basket weaving?

:text-yeahthat:    You beat me to that answer by 40 minutes (if it's right).   If it's wrong, never mind.

It would be real handy to make hull and deck planks for model boats.  Probably not the intended use, though.

Woven chair seats?

How thick are the strips this plane makes?

Neat bit of trivia on the rules.  Being left handed, I would have assumed you had left and right handed rules.....

Correct. It is a “splint “plane. Similar to a “spill” plane with the exception that it produces thicker straight strips where a spill plane produces a long curly strip.

Instead of hand splitting strips which is actually a much better way to do it although time consuming, one makes strips with plane. Next they are smoothed and thinned down a little more by scraping them with a knife. One then steams them or soak them to make them more pliable and stronger. Ideally one starts already with a “ green” board with very straight grain usually ash.

It makes full  1/16” strips.

With this exception of US cabinet makers rulers they are all oriented the same way reading left to right.

Agreed.

@formariz good stuff man. Thanks for posting.

I don't always try to get in on the answers but it's interesting to see them.

Nice tidbit of information

I don’t know if you are aware that a different version of that ruler exists that is much more convenient due to the retractable “hook”. Those are essentially the ones I use 99% of time. They are however scarce and hard to find.

I do believe I have at least one like that, it's been a while since I've seen it. I've got stuff in boxes that haven't seen the light of day in years, plus I have all of Dad's tools. And he's been gone close to 40 years. When I was working, framing for the last 15 years, those rulers wouldn't have lasted long.

My dad used to have those foldable rulers. I still remember to this day pinching the crap out of my fingers with them:unsure:

Hmmm. I still use my 6-footer all the time and I have an 8-footer that is handy on some jobs. ;)
