Mickwhitt 4,593 #1 Posted August 5, 2021 Hi all. Thought I'd start a thread on this one rather than just keep tagging it onto the daily job thread. I bought the grinder just to see if it was possible to get it working as it was a non runner and pretty scruffy. A thorough clean and strip down ensued with problems identified in the drive belts, hydraulic pump and cylinder and the auto reverse valve set up. All problems addressed it now purrs like a kitten (albeit one with a bit of bronchitis) and auto travels the grinding head back and forth beautifully. New stone was expensive but better to be safe than sorry with these things, frost could have split it as its been stored out doors for three years. Just got to make a few adaptors for different cylinder shaft diameters and we are good to go. 5 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Mickwhitt 4,593 #4 Posted August 5, 2021 I will as soon as the cylinder is mounted square. There are no graduations or reference points on it at all so its not a precision thing. But the cylinder has to be ground perfectly round and with no taper to it which is quite a job with no measuring facility. Mickwhitt 4,593 #7 Posted August 5, 2021 This is the machine running after I rebuilt it. No cylinder in to grind but the hydraulic traverse system works well. I'm very happy with it as I took the pump to a national hydraulics outfit and they had no idea how to fix such an old pump. Graphite string in a stuffing box. Mickwhitt 4,593 #11 Posted August 8, 2021 Well I spent the morning making a pair of adaptors to carry the scrap cylinder I have to practice on. Not a big job but an essential one to get the cylinder mounted in the grinder. Setting the grinding head up is a bit of a trial and error job, but of measuring and a bit of guessing. Eventually all seemed ready so I started the grinder up and away we went. Once the cylinder was ground I turned my attention to the bottom blade or bed knife. This was a different machine and again I had to guess how to set up the blade for grinding. But I figured out a temporary solution and will sort out a better way than G clamps as I go along.
