Recommended Posts

Billy the goat

Great Forum !  I have an 84 GT1100 Wheel Horse (first one) modal # A1-11B801-1984, Briggs engine 252417-0664-01 in need of a solenoid?- all connections tight, just clicks . battery fully charged. Any one  know  I where can I find original old parts or similar? So far I've had no luck with online venders....  Thanks

Click on the picture in the link

A Ford replacement is better quality and less costly

The original for the GT-1100 is 109605

There's great parts availability for these old machines if one has the sources.

This website is a great one for sure for that reason and many more.

Most anything electrical I replace with new instead of original.

Like Gary states above a 70s Ford solenoid is what to ask for. Just specify 3 or 4 post as your machine has. Usually 3.

There are good quality electric parts from several different companies available.

I try to lean towards Cole Hersey when possible.

Be sure the ground wire connections are clean and tight also. If you place an old screwdriver across the two large terminals of the solenoid will the starter turn over? Is the solenoid body grounded well? If you use a small jumper from the battery "+" to the small terminal of the solenoid will it close?

If the solenoid "clicks", it's likely not the problem.

It's really just a large relay pulling power straight from the battery to the starter. Do you have a voltmeter?

Thanks  i will check that out with voltmeter ( what am i looking for?). it did Starte once when i crossed the two terminals, it since now clicks. connections seem fine & battery fully charged. hate to replace  a part i didn't need to- got too many extra/old stuff from same behavior of mine... LOL

Pay particular attention to being sure ALL connections are solid and corrosion FREE.

It's important to remember that these are DC current systems. Direct Current. If you don't have a good path for the current to flow every direction that it's supposed to you don't have ..... direct current.

Remove, clean and reinstall each end of every wire in the starter solenoid circuit.

Doesn't happen very often but it is possible that the solenoid will click and not make enough connection to pass current.

I've had it happen. Drive me more nuts than I already am.

Look for the wiring diagram for your machine here. Most if not all are available. Have you checked the fuses?

It could be any number of things really. Most common are grounds and safety switches.

I had a tab broken off in a connector once, intermittent contact made me think I had it fixed, then nope. That one took about a year to finally figure out

If you run a jumper across the two large terminals and the starter works, then I would suspect the the contacts inside of the solenoid are bad. Replace the solenoid if this is the case.
