Lug Nut Torque

Here in New England we have a wicked crown in the road on everything but the largest of highways. To keep your tires wearing evenly you have to be able to switch them side to side.

The shops I've worked with, and for, have always done a cross rotation on one axle and a straight fore and aft rotation on the other axle.

When rotating you cross the non driving axle tires.

On AWD vehicles:

  1. Left rear goes to right front.
  2. Right rear goes to the left front.
  3. Right front goes to left rear.
  4. Left front goes to the right rear

I use to take my Nissan Titan to the dealership for oil changes. During one such visit, they told me they would rotate my tires free, as a courtesy service. I said fine. Years ago my grand daughter put a scratch in the right front wheel with her trike. Nothing terrible, but noticeable. When I got my truck back, that scratch was still on the right front wheel. I guess courtesy services are not what they use to be.

On one such visit they said they checked the cabin air filter, and it was fine. It never had a filter in it when I bought it.

I don't go there anymore.

Some folks actually mark the tires in a inconspicuous  spot to see if it tires were rotated. Can't find good help these days.

I said that once too Pack till I had some come loose and ruin the rim.

And new cars have such thin rotors, you can warp them by over torquing.

my 'lug nut' story

decades ago ... late 70's / early 80's

I had a 70 SS Chevelle I was planning to sell

a friend with a 70 SS Chevelle (pictured below) wanted to swap wheels / tires since my wheels and trim rings were in better shape ... so he swapped them

on the way home from his garage in my 70 SS I was on an open stretch on the highway and opened it up and went through the gears - then all of the sudden the car began to knock and vibrate

my heart sunk as I thought the worst ... oh no ... rod or crank bearing ...

but then as I slowed to a stop pushed the clutch in and blipped the gas lightly - the knock did not increase and then stopped when the car came to a stop

ok ... but wth

pulled into an empty parking lot and discovered the front lug nuts were loose and backing off  ... ughhh !

In PeeA, we have to endure an annual “safety” inspection, one example of numerous faulty work was my F250 lug nuts were torqued to 70 ft lbs instead of the required 140.  Safety my XXX, these inspections can kill you.

lug nuts were loose

I once worked as a parts tech at a then GM/formerly Subaru garage. The Scoobies were famous for having VERY stuck rims as mentioned earlier.

One of the techs told me they would back every lug nut out about 2 turns and go drive around the dealer lot making corners until the rims let loose from the spindle/rotor/drum.

I use German torque  Gutten tight....

I'm one who does this too. There are 3 standard levels of torque:

1. Guudensnuggin- open end wrench tight.

2. Guudentite- 1/2 inch rachet tight.

3. Fuuchentorqen- impact driver tight.

I do re-tap or chase the hub threads any time I remove a wheel and anti-sieze the crap out of the bolts. Same goes for the bolts if they need it.

I've never had a wheel loosen, but I've never had to use a breaker bar to remove a lug either.

radial tires, I don't believe you change position side to side when rotating tires

I heard, I believe, at Discount Tires, that DID apply to radials back in the day, but now they do switch sides with the modern radials.

If you want to include your spare, they will include it in the rotation...

2 nuts don't take long to torque! :)

My nuts get torqued every time @elcamino/wheelhorse mentions my name! :helmet:

I can't speak for everyone, but for me at least- every old fart has an opinion that is important to share. I can spend an hour discussing the color of AIR.

When radial tires first came out decades ago you were not supposed to switch them side to side but it’s perfectly fine now. The belts were prone to shifting back then I believe.
