T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #1 Posted July 31, 2021 Saw an ad on FB market place, it was only up for 18 minutes when I saw it. I immediately responded to it and picked it up a couple of hours later. It was only 40 minutes away. She also threw in a Rubbermaid cart, for free. It's in good to fair shape. I got it home and got it running. There are a few previous owner's mods - more on that tomorrow. I'll get more pictures tomorrow and find the year also. But for now, just a couple of pictures from the ad. 13 9
OutdoorEnvy 1,522 #2 Posted July 31, 2021 (edited) I think the 314 is the sweet spot on wheel horses...a little more mowing power with the 14hp, single cylinder Kohler(major plus), and not nearly as sought after as the single cylinder 16hp Kohlers in the c-165 and 416, etc. Great find and I bet it was an excellent value! Looking forward to the next update on it! Edited July 31, 2021 by OutdoorEnvy 5

T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #7 Posted July 31, 2021 More on this 314-8. First off, this isn't my first 314-8. Years ago I bought a 1998 314-8, kept it for a couple of years and ended up selling it to a missionary that was in Guatemala. His brother, who lived in Illinois, would make a couple of trips a year to Guatemala, with supplies and stuff to the mission down there. The missionary's parents had a Wheel Horse when he was growing up and knew they were good lawn tractors. They were using various Craftsman down in Guatemala and they wasn't holding up. I had my '98 314-8 for sale on CL and he saw the ad, and called me. Quite a shock to get a phone call from Central America. Anyways, I delivered the tractor to his brother in Illinois and it made it's way down to Guatemala. That was in 2009, so I haven't heard from him since. Now on this 314-8. The model number is 73449, making it a 1999. My '98 did not have the mow in reverse feature, this one does. But, it's probably been defeated. There is a push button switch to start it, a toggle switch that is serving as a kill switch. The ignition switch will turn on the ignition, but won't kill the engine. There is a key switch under the seat that seems to be a momentary switch...I have to research that to see if it's original, though I believe it's function is the mow in reverse key switch. There is a spring that retracts the clutch pedal - the dampener must be worn out and needs replacing. Lights work, but one taillight is missing. A little dent to the front corner of the hood. But, overall, the tractor is in decent shape. Sounds good, after I had to prime the fuel pump. Choke cable sticks a bit, and needs lubricating. Goes and drives in each gear. I hadn't tried the PTO yet, I will later today. The seller bought this house last year and the tractor came with it. The previous home owner showed the current owner how to start it (remember push button and toggle switches). But there it sat in the garage until I got there yesterday. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but for the price I couldn't pass it up. Now for the pictures. 15
WheelhorseBob 1,549 #8 Posted July 31, 2021 Very nice! I wouldn’t mind a late model 314 or 315 in my stable. The last new wheel horse I saw for sale was a left over 315. I think it was around 2009. I had the money but other priorities. I still kick myself for not buying at least one new Horse.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #9 Posted July 31, 2021 Drove it around this morning. Still has one year gas in it, so it's running a bit rough. PTO doesn't work - clutch needs to some tlc I believe. It wants to, but probably the mule drive needs adjusting, or at least a place to start. I'll probably put it back on the market - I really don't need another lawn or garden tractor. evanloock 221 #10 Posted July 31, 2021 Key switch under the seat is for the mow in reverse operation.

Randy I would probably sell it cheap (or trade for 3 point implements for my Ford tractors). Right now I just don't have room for it nor a need for it.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #15 Posted August 3, 2021 I got the deck off and found out why the blades won't turn on....a broken pipe wrench jammed underneath the center pulley. Also some more owner modifications on the Attach-amatic system. 2

I believe it broke and so they ran a long rod to lock the arms in place. What's missing is items 14, 15, 16, 18, and 20 in the attached image. In it's place they ran a long rod with a right angle bend on end, ran it through from the left and the rod had threads on the other end, and they double nut it on the left. WHX?? 48,815 #18 Posted August 3, 2021 With all the mods sounds like a PO just didn't know any better. All easy enough for any of us to get back into shape tho. Well worth it if the engine is usable or even halfway decent shape.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #19 Posted August 3, 2021 The mods can be undone, though I'm not sure how the Attach-a-matic pieces are retained on the right side. Press in? I imagine, though that item 15 keeps in place. It looks like I can still buy all the parts to get it back to original, though I might try to get them used. Lots of used mid-Attach-a-matics on the bay. I'd look for one of the newer ones with the round shaft lever exiting the left side and turning rearward--much easier to operate than the down-facing lever!
