As it was it happened with the cab still on and I was moving the tractor back into the shop. Didn't even know it happened because with the cab on you couldn't see it. clueless 2,991 #35 Posted July 29, 2021 (edited) A few years ago I bought a '97 416-8 (Onan) from the original owner, didn't need it, he was selling the tiller cheap and that's what I was there for. After we talked awhile he asked me how much I would give him for everything, I gave him a pretty low offer just to see where he was at, he said with a smile man it's yours. A few months later I was at may local 35+ years WH dealer buying some parts for one of my horses and told the guy, and a pair of plugs for the 16hp Onan. He looked up at me, and the old mechanic that was standing next to me and said what the hell are you, they know me, doing with a Wheel Horse with that damn Onan . I told them I got a good deal on it, the counter guy said I hope it was a good deal because the money you saved your going to need when you need parts and service. He said here we say Onan stands for Oh No Another One. And now page two, I have used the 416 to do everything my '77 C-160auto and my '89 312-8 do, tilling, plowing, grass cutting, heaving pulling and towing, grading mid and rear and other than the sound didn't notice any real difference . Now you can tell the 416 has more torque, and if I was using a 48 or 60 inch deck, or "stuffing a deuce into a snowbank" what ever that is I my need the extra torque but for my need the 416 doesn't do much more than my first WH a '75 B-80 4sp. wfopete 15 #38 Posted July 29, 2021 The Onan seems high maintenance with ignition module problems, the carbs are super sensitive to dirt/surging, valve seat issues, intake leaks and general electrical gremlins. Plus there are 2X of everything, pistons, valves, gaskets etc. This Onan equipped 416-8 I'm looking at is $500 and has been rebuilt years ago. There any reason to believe that the new components are better than what came on the machine compared to what came on it from the factory? Probably not. The components are not the issue - although a case could be made for the quality or material of the valve seats ? The Onan twins are high quality commercial / industrial grade engines. They will go for thousands of hours. 4000+ hours not uncommon with original components. In addition to other garden tractors including John Deere and Case - they were installed on portable generators, welders, mixers, saw mills, etc. I have 1000 hours on a 416-H and had zero issues. Zero. It's never been touched and unfortunately maintenance intervals have been stretched. Onan twin would prob not be my first choice if I had a small to medium yard - Kohler single probably a better choice. But if you cut a lot of grass the Onan twin can be a game changer. rick 233 #48 Posted August 1, 2021 I have a 314-8 and and a 416-H. I use both with a 48" deck. The only negative with the Onan engine is that the flywheel screen needs constant attention most of the time. Chaff, dead grass, leaves etc. are drawn to the screen like iron filings to a magnet. The screen must be kept clean! I have to hold my cutting speed down because I am cutting improved pasture. IOW Hi range 1st gear for the 314, and a comparable speed with the 416.
