stevasaurus 22,764 #26 Posted July 26, 2021 I told you before...it came from the factory with a 6 hsp Tecumseh pull start. You can find them, but I would not put one back on. They are very hard to find parts for. I would put an 8 hsp Kohler K-181 on it and call it an 857. Check our for sale classifieds and see if one is in there...there usually is. Parts are easy to find for the K-181.

I thought I quoted @pfrederi’s comment about the pulley.
stevasaurus 22,764 #28 Posted July 26, 2021 If the pulley is good, don't worry about it. It's just made of cheaper metal. Probably find them on E-Bay. Sorry, I mis-understood what you were asking.

stevasaurus 22,764 #30 Posted July 26, 2021 So...after all this, what are you thinking? Are you still interested in this horse?? Just curious.

My 520h is waiting for parts so if I can get this one going before then, it’ll be great. Otherwise a backup tractor is never bad, mostly because there are little things here and there on the 520 that will cause it to be decommissioned for a week or two and the lawn needs to be mowed and the driveway needs to be graded and (in a couple of months) plowed and most importantly I need another toy. Although the seller said there was someone else who called before and is going to look at it this week and I am busy until Sunday so unless I get some random stroke of luck I doubt I’ll get it. But I’ll keep hoping he texts me and says the other guy doesn’t want it. Overall, I think the price is a little high but the engine probably needs very little but the tranny and the belt cover are a different story is my guess. Another horse is never bad (and I only have the one so a manual would be fun too).
stevasaurus 22,764 #32 Posted July 26, 2021 You just answered some of the questions that I would like to ask. Mainly, what would you use it for? If you end up with this horse, you will find it a pleasure to work on compared to your 520H. There are no OSHA safety switches for one thing. You can find or make a belt guard so you don't grind gears. Actually, I would not worry about the transmission to much...it is probably good to go. If you do get it...I can help walk you through how to check it out.. If you can get it for like $100, you will probably not put more then $100 - $200 in it...if that. Let us know...the seat is worth $100.

Well when you put it that way… Unrelated, I meant to ask this earlier, how much would it be worth once I got all the bugs straightened out, as a worker not a show piece? Labor of love and here. I get my jollies by stepping back, stuffing a coffin nail in my mouth, grabbing a cold one and saying..... self....that's nice work.... then getting some seat time. Also helps to remind yourself you can't buy this stuff anymore at a big box.....Just sayin.... Edited July 26, 2021 by WHX24

It’s not really a concern, like I said it’s a worker but seat time is some good payoff…good enough for me.
stevasaurus 22,764 #38 Posted July 27, 2021 That horse looks to be in excellent shape really. Put a K-181 on it and for les money than a new push lawn mower, you can have a rider that will last another 50 years. You might even sell that 520H and find another short frame square hood. Then you can share attachments between 2 horses.

WheelHorse520H 708 #40 Posted August 8, 2021 GOOD NEWS: I just talked to the guy, I am going to pick it up Tuesday. It was in very nice condition. The paint is a little faded but nothing major. Pictures to follow. Thanks to everyone that helped me determine the value of such a nice piece of equipment. 2

slim67 2,735 #45 Posted August 26, 2021 (edited) Doesnt the tang on the idler pulley help slow the belt too Steve? I did a 301 predator in a Raider 10 and can shift gears without the belt guard on. I had to move the engine to where it was just in the right spot for everything to work. I’m putting the guard back on too. stevasaurus 22,764 #46 Posted August 26, 2021 The main function of the thingy on the tension pulley is to keep the belt from jumping off that pulley. Yes, it also would help to funnel slack, but with the help of the belt guard. The guard supports the belt across the bottom when the tension pulley is in the slack position.

Might be an unnecessary comment, but it might help you or someone else... I also put a belt guard on my trans pulley to help things out... did wonders. You can see when you push the clutch in, there is a place right above the trans pulley where there is a lot of slack that pushes toward the back of the tractor. I found that by putting a belt guard above and back behind the pulley, it stops the belt a lot better than without. If anyone is interested, I will take pictures of what I did. Again for me, it did wonders!!! Don
