Gregor 4,846 #1 Posted July 24, 2021 As some of you may know, I have 2 Massey Ferguson MF 14 tractors, both rebuilt. I have had my eye out for am MF 16, for a long time. I found one on FB a couple weeks ago, but, as I have stated soooo many times, I simply don't have the room. So I didn't jump on this 16. Every once in a while I would check back on FB, just to see if it was still listed. The last time I looked, something new caught my attention. I don't know how I overlooked it before, but it wasn't very clear in the pic. This time I noticed it. I JUMPED ! It's a typical Massey Ferguson MF 16, with a Kohler 341S, and 48" deck. The deck is toast. That's OK, I have another. Someone during it's lifetime gave it a half hearted rattle can spray with no prep work at all. Washed it, painted it.That's fine, may have added some protection to it. The guy said he could not get it to turn over. He replaced the solenoid, and still could not get it to turn over, but it would turn over by hand. He did replace the solenoid. He hooked all the wires to the new solenoid, and left it hanging in mid air. Sounds like something I would have done not too long ago. This Massey is shaft driven. I put my pipe wrench on the shaft, and it spun fine. I hooked my jump pack directly to the starter and ground, turned right over. No odd noises. The footboards/fender extension were special order back in the day, few Masseys have those. That was a plus! I am fortunate that all mine do. The seat pan is also original, another plus. Tin work is almost perfect, except for a slight crinkle, in right rear. Easy to bring back out I think. But the piesta de resistance for me was this !Not that I need a 3-point hitch, but I don't have one. I will pull it into the garage in the morning, service the engine, and see what happens. If I can't get it to fire without too much work, I will pull it around to storage, and tackle it at another time. It was listed @ 8, I offered 4, settled on $450. I gave him $460. Gregor 4,846 #2 Posted July 25, 2021 I am already compiling a list of parts I need for this build. The pic below shows a rubber protective boot, (I guess), on one arm of the PTO. I would like another one, but I don't even know what to call it, to go searching for one. Are these pretty generic, or are they specific to the 3-point hitch? Thank for any info. Gregor 4,846 #4 Posted July 25, 2021 Got the Massey into the garage. New Plug, cleaned the points, gap was fine. New battery, and new battery cables. Hooked up a remote fuel source, as the tank needs cleaning inside. It's not rusty inside, just has some crud. Changed oil. Hit the key, nuttin, I by-passed the brake safety switch, which is the only safety switch on this tractor, still, nuttin, I did have 12 V at the coil. I will have to investigate the start circuit a bit more. I have talked before about how handy an endoscope can be. Here are pics from the scope as taken through the drain plug hole. At least I know my dipper is in tact. Balance gears also seem to be present. Looks pretty clean inside to me. I hooked my jump pack to the starter, and it fired up. Runs a little rough, won't idle, and seems to like about 1/2 choke. Probably needs carb work.That's ok, I have lots of carbs.I have it hooked to a 1/2 gallon fuel tank. When it burnt through that, I changed the oil again, this time adding a little Rislone engine treatment. When It burns through another 1/2 tank, I will change the oil again. Maybe over-kill but hey, it's only money, and I like to be thorough. Which brings me to a question about oil, but I will post that in the engines topic. I blocked up the rear end and tested the 2 speed Sunstrand hydro. Gregor 4,846 #7 Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) I wish I could answer your question, but I just don't know that much about Hydro transmissions. Or any transmission for that matter. It has a high / low selector lever, along with the typical infinite speed lever, like any hydro. I do know the top speed for this tractor is 9 MPH. It moves right along for a garden tractor.
