Why didn't this Tecumseh HH100 shut off?

I was testing the HH100 earlier today to be sure it had spark before I put it all back together.

You can see some of how I had it connected in the picture below.

Battery positive through the switch to the starter. Negative jumper I ended up moving to the oil drain spout but that was connected to the battery of course. Green wire that goes to the Magneto was connected to the M on the ignition switch.

The small wire that comes out from behind the flywheel and goes up to the side of the ignition module was bare metal from being chewed on by a mouse. We surrounded it with electrical tape and zip ties.

I believe the back of my ignition switch has the two large terminals for the battery cables which are marked B and S for Battery & Starter, R for Regulator, M for Magneto, L for Lamps?

This was working perfectly fine while it was in the tractor.

Did I not have enough connections?

Did the switch need to be grounded?

What am I missing and what can I do to diagnose this before I put the sheet metal on the engine?

The switch needs to be grounded so it can kill the ignition system.

This little bugger actually wants to run and work very much.

Starts right up with vim and vigor.

Needs the carburetor to be cleaned out.

I would like very much to date code this engine. I'm curious to know if the engine block is original to the 68 model year or not.
