OutdoorEnvy 1,522 #1 Posted July 21, 2021 This was a fun save project with my 8 year old son, Jack. This would be his tractor so he can have some fun and help out with yard/land work...and have a good learner tractor that if he crashed into something or whatnot I wouldn't lose my mind over it! Ha! So we picked up this MW 12/38 Industrial Commercial series lawn tractor for $40 over this past winter. Had the good Briggs flathead cast iron series engine. Typical story of hadn't ran in who knows how long and owner needed it gone. It was all there so we picked it up. Didn't take much really to get it going, we rebuilt the carb, replaced fuel lines and cleaned out the gas tank, basic oil change, air filter, and spark plug, new battery. Once we knew we had a solid runner we did pull the head and clean it, set the valve clearances and new head gasket. Really the biggest expense was 4 new tires. We did use some ATV style ones for the rear just for some added traction. We'll save the 38" deck project for later, it needs rebuilt but we'll let Jack get used to driving it for now. Overall the tractor turned out good and Jack loves it! It was a fun project with him. My wife joked that I must be getting impatient for a first truck project when he's 15, LOL! She's probably right...Well anyways here's some pics after we were all finished up. It is red so thought it would be okay to post it up here! thanks for looking! 7 3
ebinmaine 67,484 #2 Posted July 21, 2021 Well done! My first "tractor" as an adult was a Murray that had an 11 HP Briggs I/C. Great little engine. I believe you'll find that MW to be quite capable if used within the limitations of the light duty transaxle. Let him get used to being in control of the machine then throw some weight on it in the right places and it'll tow quite a lot more than you realize. Good luck!

And one of my nephews when he was about 12 y.o. asked me; "How'd y'all get girls back in your day Uncle Jeff?" I told him that we used to knock 'em on the head with our clubs and drag them back to the cave. His Mama wasn't pleased...
