formariz 11,987 #1 Posted July 17, 2021 Being the owner and user of a dozen or so of these things I am not a total idiot on how to adjust them . Have done this a thousand times. However this time I am totally stumped. Throttle cable broke on one of the RJs. Replaced it and put everything back same way. Now it revs full blast all the time regardless I’d what I do. Seems like speed adjustment does nothing. Something internally broken perhaps?
squonk 41,118 #2 Posted July 17, 2021 Cas read my thread about the engine again. I bet you have a broken tab on that gov shaft like I did. I got 2 broken ones!
stevasaurus 22,740 #3 Posted July 17, 2021 Is the length of the wire sticking out of the throttle tube the same length as it was ?? Also, is the tie down screw showing the same amount of throttle case sticking out toward the carb?? Those adjustments can make a big difference. Maybe, loosen the little screw and pull back the sheath a little. Something to try before opening the engine. If the flag is broke on your governor shaft, you should be able to turn it around without the flag stopping the shaft.
formariz 11,987 #4 Posted July 17, 2021 (edited) I can not turn shaft so flag is probably OK. The thing is that regardless of what I do with throttle cable the result is same . It will rev full blast with throttle closed. The speed adjustment has no effect regardless of where I put it. Could perhaps be that something happened with throttle shaft and it is wide open all the time even though outside arm works and nothing to do with governor section? Even if I remove throttle cable from governor I should be able to operate throttle by hand. Result is the same it will rev full blast. squonk 41,118 #5 Posted July 17, 2021 Did you look inside the carb to see if the throttle plate is still there?

This thing was working perfectly before cable broke. Its got to be it. I never had one with runaway revs with throttle closed before. Got to take a break from it.It was just driving me nuts. stevasaurus 22,740 #9 Posted July 17, 2021 Opps, I said that wrong Cas above. I should have said...loosen the screw holding the throttle sheath and push some of it toward the carb and then tighten. Pulling it away from the carb will increase the speed. See, I am reflecting over a cocktail also.

See, I am reflecting over a cocktail also. LOL. Even with the throttle cable disconnected and throttle lever pushed in closing it I have full runaway revs. Something else has to be going on. Ill be digging back into it after the next glass of "Gettysburg tears". I should have a full calm collected demeanor then.
formariz 11,987 #11 Posted July 17, 2021 So, I just removed carb, and there is nothing wrong with it. Throttle plate, lever all is working fine. Going to put it back and do one final attempt doing what I have done literally a thousand times before over the years. If it does not work right that is it,pulling engine and replacing it with another one off the shelf. Something has to be wrong that I cannot see. Probably change it to a NOS K91S. Getting tired of the pull start thingy anyway.
squonk 41,118 #12 Posted July 17, 2021 My only other guess is a governor weight stuck
clueless 2,991 #13 Posted July 17, 2021 So did the engine run okay before you replaced the throttle cable?
stevasaurus 22,740 #14 Posted July 17, 2021 I hear Squonk is into buying engines without looking at them. Just a thought.

So I put everything back the way it should be and started it again. Sure enough it it was going full blast with throttle closed again. This time I did not shut it off right away as before ( it was running at close to 4800 RPMs) but while running tapped the side of block by governor a few times. Bingo! After last tap it slowed down to idle. It now works as it should and speed adjustment also works as it should. Weight stuck??? I don't even know how that could happen. 2 hours ago, clueless said: So did the engine run okay before you replaced the throttle cable? Engine ran fine before. It has been sitting without being started since cable broke which was about a month ago. Probably part of problem.

This is one of the RJs wife has taken over as a lawn ornament. Last month when kids were all here we took it for a ride and that is when cable broke . It has sat since then. I always start it once per week but since cable was broken I have not until now.
squonk 41,118 #18 Posted July 18, 2021 One of the weights was probably stuck so the pin on the governor gear wouldn't move out and apply pressure on the shaft tab so slow the engine down. With all this rain we've had in the East there was probably lots of condensation inside and the engine hasn't been run long enough to eliminate it. Probably started to rust.
wallfish 16,999 #19 Posted July 18, 2021 The problem has to be in the carb somewhere and not the governor. The governor only controls the carb but you were overriding that and controlling it by hand. @AMC RULES 's point of the oil could make sense if there's fuel in the oil, that could possibly feed fuel vapor into the cylinder.
