Spotted Lantern Devils

Recommended Posts

I lost my hemlocks some years ago to the woolly adelgids.  I sprayed, but the trees were too high to do it right.

have not seen spotted lanternfly - yet - but I'm wondering if they are around ... something took out a tulip poplar at one edge of our property (?)

we are dealing with a big pest issue now - woolly adelgid

I've planted around 50-60 Canadian hemlocks over the past 25 years - most on or near property lines

the hemlocks grew well and looked great - but now we are in danger of losing them  (white residue from woolly adelgid evident) ... one tree now gone (pic below)

We lost our stand of 8 hemlocks to those woolies some years back. I still miss them and that spot stands empty as I've not figured out a good species to put there!

Had a 3 foot tree of unknown species growing in my holly tree, when I cut it out it was covered with the devils.  Stomped it as best I could but probably half of them got away.  They were all in the red stage.  I wonder if most people can identify them in their various stages, they keep changing appearance.

The devils and a late cicada on the screen last night.

The DW had a cicada land on her yesterday, I guess he was late to the party and was trying to find a girlfriend.

I tried the sticky tape and it caught some of them, but most backed off as soon as they felt thier front leg sticking.   They would crawl around the tree feeling the tape for an opening.  Then eventually hopped off and flew back landing above the tape.

So, today I made a screen funnel to guide them into a baggie.

It's working....and also catching Cicadas.     The lantern flys make it to the baggy but the Cicadas don't seem to enter the baggy, but are caught up in the screen.

Yesterday I took down the large tree of heaven to remove a large food source for the devils.  It was covered with them and I was only able to spray a small portion.  In hindsight, it may have been better to wait till they lay their eggs in the fall and then destroyed them.  The tree was about 10" in diameter, 3 feet above the ground.  The wood is very heavy and splits easily, so I will use it for firewood.

My traps on the large silver maple are collecting a lot of devils and cicadas.    But many are landing on the tree above the traps and climbing to the top.    I am wondering if the tree is in danger of not surviving.

Now the flys are visiting the stump of the tree of heaven that I cut down.  I sprayed them and hope to kill more in the future.

Stopped at a local pizza shop today and found this mess, the owner vacuums them up everyday.  She called the ag department and they said the soybean field across the road is the source of the infestation, of course they offered no assistance.

They have wings.    The traps are filling up with SLYs, Cicadas, and Cicada Killer Wasps.

We used to see mantis' 4-5 times a year. Now I don't think we've seen any in 4-5 years.

Same for lunar mothes

Time to change the bags again.    This is around 5 gallon so far and no sign of it ending.

Man that is NASTY!  Around here in SW Michigan we get a yearly scourge of stink bugs, boxelder bugs, & lady bugs, can't wait till those show up here.

I'll have my blow torch & shotgun waiting for them...YUCK!
