Ed Kennell 38,028 #1 Posted July 12, 2021 Found this critter close to the pumpkin patch. 77 years hanging out with critters and I have never seen this varity. Has a hard bettle like body with wings, but never attempted to fly. Does not have the red under wings of the spotted lantern fly.

I am surprised that I have never seen one in York Co. since they are so easy to identify with those big fake eyes.

At first glance I thought they were moths as some of those have eye markings. Just yesterday I saw a real infestation of more than a hundred spotted lantern flies in my woods. They were in the black and white stage and the red stage. I sprayed them with flying insect killer and they dropped like..... flies.

Last year I sprayed one large grape vine, about 50 yards from the latest attack, and there were a considerable number from top to bottom. There are only a few of these wild grape vines so they need cut, I believe the flies go after the secretions. Last year I saw a considerable number of the flies on a very large oak tree at my dentist office in Lancaster County. I reported that to the PA Dept. of Agriculture only to find out they have thrown in the towel, the fight is lost.

Afraid so, I reported the first ones I saw 2 years ago and after I filled out the report and gave them the GPS co-ords, they said I was all ready in the infected area, but they did come out and inspected my trees and collected a nest.
