squonk 41,153 #128 Posted August 7, 2021 Tore down the"parts" engine. Looks pretty good except the oil was last changed when Lucy was a twinkle in Desi's eye. I have started to clean the inside of the block to apply the handyman's secret crack detector, carb cleaner. Crank looks good. The camshaft came right out. No sign of the shim! I am not sure if I'm going to use this cam. There is an imprint of the exhaust lobe on the tappet that you can feel with your fingernail. I was always taught not to use a tappet or lifter from one cam to another. You can just make out the impression from the middle of the "E" to the middle of the bottom line of the "E" Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Someone like @Greentored could comment there. AS a side note you have (2) 8 HP Kohler engines with broken governors. I found today that the one that is original to The Military Tribute Tractor has a broken governor and the exhaust valve sticks. I won't be able to get into that engine for quite a while. Keeping the lifters and corresponding cam lobes 'matched' is absolutely correct, especially in the automotive world. Same for rockers, pushrods, etc... New lifters on old cam= ok. New cam and old lifters= no no. I'll be honest with you guys- I have never done it on a small engine, and never matched pushrods and rockers in an automotive application either and never had any issues. BUT, keeping them in order IS the recommended way to do it. In this case, id slap a new set of lifters in it just for peace of mind and send it. If you do want some more oomph, a custom grind on that cam will really wake it up. I tried doing it on my own, the payoff was impressive but the labor was painstaking and not repeatable. squonk 41,153 #146 Posted August 21, 2021 Another fly in the ointment. One piece camshaft with 2.02" exhaust tappet. Tappet is on base circle of cam. Look how high the valve sits. That is a heck of a lot to grind off when setting the lash! The other engine I had had a 1 piece cam but it had a 1.96" tappet in it so I put that one in and look at the difference. Much more what I would have expected before grinding the stem to set lash. So did the 1 piece cam use a 2.02" or a 1.96" exhaust tappet? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The valve being used was in the engine when there was a 2 piece cam in it. The valve on my other engine which had a 1 piece cam appeared to be the same length. It also had the 1.96" tappet. richmondred01 2,237 #149 Posted August 22, 2021 (edited) Lots of parts swapping goes on. I got in a NOS stock k321 last week from a cadet. The guy said it run but the rpm couldn’t be controlled. I figured it was the governor cross rod tab right? I pulled the pan and saw that someone had removed the governor from a brand new engine.
