Its coming home!

Gentlemen,

Today, in England, there is a football match taking place.

Proper football, or as you know it soccer.

It is the final of the European Cup and it is the first major international tournament final that our team have reached since 1966.

Almost my entire lifetime, man had not been to the moon when we last played for such a trophy.

At 8pm BST this evening a nation will hold its breath for 90 minutes plus injury time.

We have the Italians to beat, a very good team.

Wish England luck and hopefully, football is coming home!

Mick

My son's wife and family are Italian, so you know what colors are being waved today at their house. I personally don't care. They are both talented teams. But like most professional sports, the fans of the winning team will get rowdy, and the fans of the losing team will get rowdy. In all of my 71 years I have never figured that one out.

Hoping for a well-played and entertaining match between two, as @Mickwhitt noted, very talented teams. I would not care to predict the outcome!

As long as its a good match I will be content. The whole tournament has been very good so far and fair from the point of view of referees etc.

This is the best chance we've had in 25 years and our first final since 1966.

Wishing both teams a good game and still shouting COME ON ENGLAND. !

I agree, and hope the referees and field judges are as on top of THEIR game as the two other teams on the field (and I hope the fans display their enthusiasm constructively, too)! Would love to see a "highlights" reel after the match containing only terrific football.

Oh well, it was a good game but penalties became the way to settle it. There used to be replays but now they won't do that.

I'm not sure what you guys do if a game is tied at the end. But for me penalties is not a good way, everyone is tired and nervous, its no longer a game of skill.

They don't get two boxers to stand toe to toe and take shots at each other to decide the winner after a tie. So why football. For me they should allocate points through the game for good play and bad. We have statistics coming at us about every aspect of the game so these could be used to decide the winner. Might stop some of the dirty play and deter the diving we see these days.

Anything has to be better than just flipping a coin, which happened at least once to decide a game

Generally....

In "regular season" games, US football ends with 10 minutes of extra time and a coin toss for first possession.

A touchdown on the 1st possession wins, but failing that it is the score at the end of extra time. If still tied, it is a tie.

In "post season" games, i.e. where the winner moves on, and there is no touchdown by the first possessor and the score remains tied, there are as many 10 minute extra time periods as needed to have a winner by score.

(There are some additional rules based on possessions--I spared them here.)

Personally, for your brand of football, and with some adjustments to the rules of substitution and timeouts, I think 10 minute extra time periods with a break between and first scorer wins would be better. Using any statistic that isn't patently obvious or that requires judgement would be a point of contention, IMHO. But, I'm not in charge, am I?

Penalty deciders are not a good idea imo. Put to much pressure on whose taking it and look what's happened on social media. The coloured lad who missed, is getting racist abuse from ignorant yobs.

Play extra time until the next goal or tally the fouls. Most fouls loses.

The coloured lad

Don't know about the UK, but FYI, in the US it's generally considered 'racist' to refer to African-Americans as "coloured lads".

Wasn't meant to be racist. That's the last thig I am. I've a nephew who's half Asian Indian and half English. He's married to a Sioux native American. A niece who's half English and half black American. SWMBO is half English and half Welsh. Not sure what I am. :confusion-confused:

Trouble is these days with all the PC stuff, you don't know what you can say from one day to the next. Maybe I should have said person of colour.

So years back there was a comedian of West Indian descent. Charlie Williams. Born and bred in Yorkshire with the accent to suit. He used to say that white people have brown hair, black, blonde, red. Blue eyes, brown, green. And you call us coloured. :D

Sure, I know that Norman.  Just saying so that in case you ever travel to the US you might not want to use that term... ;)
