rmaynard 15,459 #27 Posted July 7, 2021 Yup, crosshatch and new rings. Worked for me in my 54 year old Tecumseh V60. Burned oil like crazy. Nothing afterwards. 3
peter lena 8,627 #28 Posted July 7, 2021 @WHX24 think the best combo for hot weather , is rislone zinc and # 30 shell rotella , that way you are getting great protection and the added cleaning with the zinc , that hot work with the cleaner , will give you what you want , for protection and an easier running engine . the heavy oil theory , typically does not help with the varnish build up in these engines . always marveled at the color change to new oil with the added zinc , you are looking at varnish removal , and an easier running engine . just my own experience , pete

My understanding is that it is a lubricant, particularly with respect to the flat tappets. Never heard of it's use as a cleaner.

peter lena 8,627 #35 Posted July 7, 2021 @Jeff-C175, Jeff I can tell you , not only is is a lubricant , but since regularly adding it to my oil changes , the dipstick tube on my engines and the dip stick look like new inside, also the milky dip tube residue is gone. like it says makes new oil work better in older style engines . rotella 30 # and rislone zinc , has made me a believer , put some hours on that additive and prove it to yourself . simple and easy to do. not making this up , pete 1
Jeff-C175 7,202 #36 Posted July 8, 2021 @peter lena Thanks Pete! I've been using Rotella T1 30 weight for over a decade now in all my equipment, summer and winter. They're all clean as a whistle inside. I do add a tad of zddp when I remember to.
Docwheelhorse 2,660 #37 Posted July 8, 2021 Well Men and Ladies of Redsquare.... I gotta bow my head in shame and admit I goofed.... I'm not saying that the motor is completely smoke free and runs like new... --BUT-- I had in my head that these large oil pan Kohlers (K and Mag) held 3 qts of oil... so.... I poured 3 qts in and didn't even look at dipstick---I find these screw in old school dipsticks to be hard to read especially with clean fresh oil. So---I beat the stuffing out of the old girl and thought I accomplished something because it nearly stopped smoking but the oil was still at full on dipstick after the run--- when in reality all I did was burn the qt extra with the motor going W.T.H you dope the whole time... richmondred01 2,237 #38 Posted July 8, 2021 Since it was so full, you may want to pull the valve cover and clean the breather. It’s most likely soaked.

I use this and it simply works . pete I wouldn't call what I was doing "beating it" but... I made sure to put a good solid load on it so that she was pulling hard... this routine seems to help re-seat rings etc... I've seen a lot of 2 and 4 stroke marine engines have low compression cylinders come back after a treatment with a "ring free" type solution---Valvtech Marine motor De-Carb is what we always used at boat shop I worked at. Valvtech told us to get the motor hot... spray most of can down intake as it ran... stall it, fill cylinders with solution and then let sit 30 minutes. Then take it out and "run the P i s s " out of it. The stuff is nasty and we where told that you need to run it hard for the product to work and to make sure it is completely out of a 2 stroke as it will melt the crank seals over time... and to run a 4 stroke hard then change oil for same reason... I gotten a can yet to try on this motor. Just figured I'd post and see what other people where doing. Tony
richmondred01 2,237 #40 Posted July 8, 2021 Seafoam is another good product to help loosen rings and carbon on an engine that’s been sitting. Before tearing down this old cub loboy I used it in the crankcase as well as the spray for the intake. It still needed to be rebuilt but it did run better. 4 1

It's smoking because oil is getting into the combustion chamber. Valve guides, rings or a combination of both. Let the oil burn until your are ready to rebuild it. Agree. No liquid is going to replace the worn away metal clearances that are allowing the oil to bypass and burn. It was likely the state it was in when you bought it because it burned oil and they only kept adding when low from burning instead of ever changing it. Afraid you gotta a mosquito killer or a James Bond smoke screen feature until a rebuild .

I've heard that in extreme cases of overfilling oil that one could potentially cause a sort of "hydro lock" condition and blow the piston/rod. I can see how that could possibly occur.
