Any magic potions or oils recommended?

Hello All,

Bought a "beater" at show... couldn't check oil because A) lazy and would've had to find wrench... its an old K with screw in dipstick.

Tractor puffed LIGHTLY... and I took it home.

Undid dipstick today and found oil thick and black and just touching dipstick. I poured in some kero... flushed motor and drained / re-filled with 30 weight... well with ENGINE FULL it smokes like a freight train. I then sprayed some de-carb / ring free into spark plugs and let it soak for 30 minutes. Then said screw it and put a deck on and beat the stuffing out of it mowing thick, tall wet grass... by the end the smoke was way way down. I may soak it again unless you guys have any suggestions for oil or magic potions that may clean the rings put and get this motor sealed up a little better... I wanted to plow with it and use it as a yard tractor. I know... I know... I hear you screaming re-ring it, but I just don't have time now.

You call that smoke?!?!? I got a KT17 that beats that and a Briggs twin that together the US Army wanted me to come lay down smoke screens for their next invasion.  

Sorry to have to tell you Doc that looks like toasted rings to me. You could try a little MMO in it just for $h!t& grins. Ain't a can of liquid tune up in the world gonna cure that tho.

Pour a gallon of this in there. Let it sit for a week. Empty it out and rebuild the engine. Works every time!

Are you sure  it didn't stop smoking because the oil is low now? Might as well throw a couple qts. If Seafoam in it and let it rip!

50/50 transmission fluid cleans them up pretty good, run it hard.....drain r hot!

I got a 10 hp magnum that smokes like that when it has not been run for a while. If i run it everyday just a touch of smoke on start up. I run 10w-30 in it and it seems to be the best.

Nope... it was down a bit... but still at least 3/4s full... it cleaned up sonewhat

My friend inherited Gramma's 63 Ford Galaxie.  38000 miles.  Smoked like the mosquito fog truck.  Beat the snot out of it.  Took 3 weeks but the smoke stopped completely.  Gramma never took it over 30.

 

Probly wasn't Gramma's mower, but ya never know!  It might clear up!

Yamaha recommends Ring-Free be used at all times in their snowmobile engines.  Apparently the thin rings and basically a race engine doesn't do well with the varied usage that the engine is exposed to.  I never used it but there may be some positive result, besides dealer profit, from using it.  In your case, I might try it for a short time and then change the oil in the hope that crud will be expelled.

that collective engine varnish , takes time to clean up , this is not a 1 and done flush , but as I  regularly used mine in clean up , you could see less smoke , and oil filth was quickly apparent . beating the hell out of something is not the way it works, shorter oil changes after hot running , additive and fresh oil , is the easiest way . all of mine now have like new clean dip stick readings , oil changes are longer , no smoke at all , engines run with ease , add rislone zinc to all my oils . I  use this and it simply works . pete

@WHX24, just wondering how many hours did you use it ? I noticed a change in how fast the oil condition changed , and an easier running . another thing that changed was the milky slime in the dip stick tube , that is totally gone , and the dip stick itself , looks brand shinny new, my oil changes really flush out . like a debris cleaning dump . refill and do it again . pete

If you know me, I'm not a fan of snake oil, whether in the gas or in the oil. It's smoking because oil is getting into the combustion chamber. Valve guides, rings or a combination of both. Let the oil burn until your are ready to rebuild it.

I truth be told Pete can't remember.... matter of fact can't remember what tractor I even used it in. When you have 30 tractors it gets kinda tough to remember what one does to what tractor. Maintenance logs help if I remember to update them! 

Have to side with Maynard on  this one tho not a fan of tune up in a can. The bore is egg shaped or valve guides worn  nothing side of some machine shop love is gonna fix it proper. I do use oil additives in the good motors tho. 

The Dino @stevasaurus brought a 857, I think, to plow day once that smoked like a bandito. He knew it was due for some love but ran it anyway. We shut her down when she was struggling and he went thru the motor good as new.

@WHX24, thanks for the feed back , my 3 horses are enough for me , and I  regularly rotate  their usage , as I  experiment with all issues. my experience is about 5-10 hrs with rislone products , for a transition to improving. what ever smoking or related issues I had on used engines , is all but gone , internal cleaning is very obvious , with dip stick tube , clean and clear , oil goes longer , and drainage is like hot coal oil . you have to detail your attempt , this is not a 1 and done thing , you are trying to recover neglect , when I  find a cure , to anything , that goes on the other 2 horses , that way its easier to keep track of regular maintenance. like using STABIL every time I top off , no fuel issues at all , good luck with your projects , pete

Your absolutely right Pete I should document things a bit more on these smokers and pay attention to oil changes/flushing. 

 

Any thoughts out there on if running say 40 or 50 weight oil would help? In hot weather of course.
