gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #2 Posted July 2, 2021 Welcome to the forum. What does the belt drive? Mower decks are sized by their width of cut - not the width of the deck. 42" rear discharge? 44", 48", 52" or 60" side discharge? Drive belt from the engine or a spindle belt on the deck? Model number and serial number of the deck is the best. Some front idler assemblies that tension the drive belt have the adjuster knob on the bottom and some are on the front. This may make a difference to belt length. Garry

peter lena 8,587 #5 Posted July 2, 2021 @Jon sharp as with any recently purchased item , finding neglect and frozen / rusted movement areas are very common , agree with @gwest_ca ,on adjustment areas and frozen movement points. my best luck with similar problems is to expose as much as you can to see its intended function . removing , and lubricating covers ,as you go. a helping hand to work the engagement point will let you find the issue. make the rust run out , just my own experience , pete

JoeM 7,871 #9 Posted July 2, 2021 Jon Welcome! Under the hood of one of my xi is this decal, handy for parts etc. If your changing the belt from the engine to the deck, you have to loosen the take up by swinging the arm out and loosening the take up screw. I found it easier to put the belt on the engine pulley and mower pulley then the pulleys on the mule drive. According to the decal you have the right drive belt for the 44" deck. JoeM 7,871 #10 Posted July 2, 2021 Not a big big deal posting in the wrong place, but should have went in Implements and Attachments. one of the mods will move it i figure shortly.

JoeM 7,871 #12 Posted July 2, 2021 (that under the hood shiny, lol....top not so nice!) I looked around for a few more pics and found these of the take up bar and the two different styles of mule drives with the knobs in different places. The first pic shows the mule drive tensioner unlatched.

Jeff-C175 7,199 #14 Posted July 2, 2021 Is this a discrepancy, or am I reading something wrong? This looks like the 44" takes the 4094 belt: But this says 4095. I think perhaps the "105" numbers are superceded part numbers? They don't match the label above either.
Jon sharp 4 #15 Posted July 2, 2021 I thought the same thing, and a 4094 was the one they has on previous
JoeM 7,871 #16 Posted July 2, 2021 found this in a previous post Garry had listed. Seem as it mattters what mule drive is used! learn more everyday! Have added many belt numbers and sizes to the page that describes the file for the deck's parts lists. Saves downloading a file to find out the belt sizes. The belt charts do have mistakes in them so when I see the opportunity to check numbers like above I do it. This time I think there is a mistake in the decal. 105-1491 (5/8" x 94") drive belt for 42" deck on decal - This is correct but the deck is a rear discharge 1998-2001. The 5xi never got a 42" side discharge deck. 95-4095 (5/8" x 98") drive belt for 44" deck on decal - This belt fits the 48" decks 1998-2001 when the front idler assembly had the adjustment knob on the front. 105-1490 (5/8" x 98.5") drive belt for 48" deck on decal - This belt fits the 48" decks 2002-on when the front idler assembly had the adjustment knob on the bottom. 95-4094 (5/8" x 96.7") drive belt for 52" deck on decal - This belt is correct but also used with 44" decks 105-1491 (5/8" x 94") drive belt for 60" deck on decal - This is correct The 105-1500 decal shows up 2002-2006 and was on the front panel of the idler assembly. Hope I have this right. Garry
Jon sharp 4 #17 Posted July 4, 2021 Thanksfor everything guys,it was that tensioner rod that was given me trouble. Got it going seems good. How hot is normal operating temp for the belt, like after 30 minutes should it be hot enough you cant hold it for more than 10 seconds?
Jeff-C175 7,199 #18 Posted July 4, 2021 3 hours ago, Jon sharp said: cant hold it for more than 10 seconds? That's probably not more than120F or so. I wouldn't think that's too hot.
JoeM 7,871 #19 Posted July 5, 2021 On 7/3/2021 at 9:13 PM, Jon sharp said: should it be hot Mowed with the 522xi with 60" deck for 30 or so and the belt was pretty warm. Have to remember all the engine heat is blown forward over the drive pulley. Adds up big time to the belt temperature.
Jon sharp 4 #20 Posted July 5, 2021 Yea i figured as much, its just one of the things i never think about. Like how hot is to hot.but after2 acres it seemed to be lookin fine
