KT 17 kohler

Here is my problem! WH running great than stopped.Checked out and gas line started leaking.Pushed into barn installed new gas line and now it will not start. WH has a electric fuel pump and it appears getting gas to carb.I now have fresh gas, new gas filter and 5/16 fuel line.Can any one help me out I would really appreciate it.  Thank you. schalfback

"Will not start"  Meaning it cranks but won't fire or doesn't even turn over????

While several things could be wrong - there are 2 very basic things that are at the top of the list--- Fuel supply (which you seem to have covered) Next is spark/fire ... determine if you got 12v at the coil (the KT17 seems to like to eat coils) if you got voltage there see if the plugs are sparking, then go to the points/condenser. If all these are good then youll have to find out why. Bad coil, points condenser, loose cnx in wiring (ck that every thing is grounded).

 

Determine that you are getting the spark first and let us know .....

So what happened? I'm in suspense. My C175 has very little spark and won't fire (as of 4:30 today when I had 300 bricks on a dump cart ready to haul to my front yard).

 

I am thinking of converting my condenser to a low-amp "transdenser". From past experience every older Kohler I've owned (just 2 before this KT17s) eats points. I cannot thank Kohler enough for the remote points set up. My Tecumseh HH70 is a pain in the neck to change the points on.

 

I'll take Pacer's advise about the coil. I can check that easy enough.

 

I was already planning to replace the plugs and wires so I guess my time table just got moved up.

 

This wheel horse business is loads of fun. I bet it can be addictive if one is not careful.

I can't speak to other older engines, but my KT-17 series 1 is on it's second set of points installed for no good reason when I got the machine in the late 1900s.  I've got a new set on the shelf but the ones that are in there are still OK.

we got a 1964 704 (7hp Kohler) around the mid-70's - used it until late 90's and then sat it 

 

still has original points - never touched them or even looked at them 

 

the last 5 or so years we used it could barely get a quality 1/2 pull because the pull start mechanism was wonky and it would still start almost immediately

Check the voltage to your coil if you don't have a good strong spark.  If the voltage is good, change the points and condenser.  Also consider a new set of plug wires.  After installing the points, set the timing with a timing light.  Be sure to put the screws that hold the points cover on back in while setting the timing.  One of the screws goes into an oil passage.  Oil will spray everywhere, and cover your new points.  Download the manual.

Voltage from closed ignition switch is 12.4 vdc and the coil shows 4.7 ohms resistance but nothing from the positive terminal to the plug sockets. Also plug wires were missing the metal clips that go into the coil and the coil terminals for the plug wires are burned down to nearly nothing. So I've ordered the whole shootin' match. Coil, points, condenser, plugs, and wires.
