Parking Brake Issue

Recommended Posts

Bill Winn

Good afternoon Red Riders,

My c175's parking brake does not latch. The brake itself works just fine. (in fact it works so much better than the brake on my 1988 Servistar that I nearly threw myself off due to being accustomed to having to stomp on the brake).

I have attached pictures of my PB assembly for public review/ comment.

Bill

Step hard on the brake pedal, pull the lever back and let go of the brake pedal.

When you do that, the edge of the U shaped bracket should catch on one of the teeth.

It doesn't 'latch' ?

Yes, I figured that is the way it was supposed to operate the issue is that the teeth do not rotate rearward far enough to catch the u shaped bracket. Is there an adjustment to rotate the part with the teeth on it?

No, but maybe the brake is actually adjusted too tight?  Try loosening up the brake adjustment.

Loosen the brake adjustment until you can engage the parking brake.  With the brake engaged, tighten the adjustment so the brake stops the tractor.

You should have to press the brake down pretty far to stop.  Sounds like someone adjusted it too tight.

I'll give that a try

Bingo, Adjusted almost totally in. I adjusted it out until the teeth caught the bracket and now we're back in parking mode. No wonder the crazy thing almost threw me off when I hit the brake. Now it feels much more normal. Thank you Jeff-C175

That's what clued me in that it might be too tight!  Usually have to press down pretty far.

Yours is an 8 speed I believe?

On the AUTO models, when you press the brake it returns the motion control to NEUTRAL so the brake is sorta redundant, but I've gotten in the habit of hitting the PB if I leave the machine running and exit the seat for any reason.  Too easy for a 'run away' horse if I bump the lever when leaving the seat!

By the way, when you 'quote' a message, if you enter your reply text in the space BELOW the quote box, it separates it from the quote.
