STUCK TOW VALVE... Sundstrand HydroGear

The TOW VALVE...or PUSH VALVE...on these Sundstrand HydroGear models 90-2046 and 90-2062 can be a real PITA to get working properly.  Most of them are seldom if ever used and, after 50 years or so, it becomes stuck and virtually impossible to turn.  Such was the case of my 1972 Bronco 14.  SOLUTION: (1) Trim off short end of ROLL PIN enough to fit a Box-end 1" wrench onto the Hex Nut...which is really the TOP of the valve.  (2)Wiggle the 1" boxend wrench onto the nut and give the wrench a quick & hard bump to break the nut free.  (3) Back the nut completely out of the hole...it'll be rusty.  (4)With nut out of hole, pull up HARD on the roll pin to get it out of the cavity...turning as you pull up.  Here are a few pics.  NOTE: In some cases, a Crescent Wrench may work instead of the 1" Box End wrench shown here.

Ah yes, the - seemingly always stuck - tow valve!!

The 'Big D's' has a couple different shaped. One is slotted for a ... 'large' flat blade screw driver:ranting: and the other has a 3/8" square head. I had a D180 that had the slotted end and along with being stuck, it was mangled so badly it wasnt coming loose.!!

So when I went into the Sundstrand and had it on the bench I could finally get a pipe wrench on it and break it loose - geez that thing was mangled and stuck!  The diameter of the end was right at 3/8" so I took a 3/8 nut and jammed it on there and brazed the nut to it.

The other style isnt so bad, I take a long 3/8 ratchet extension reversed and with a small crescent on the other end they'll come loose pretty easily.

Sometimes you wonder what those engineers were thinking with some of the goof ball things that did!!
