Filling TRANS Oil or ATF...no "Bubble Over"

No more 'BUBBLING OVER.  Just insert a 12" long plastic drinking straw thru the funnel & into the gearbox to vent the air.  Straw should be above the rim of the funnel. Use the Dipstick to hold straw in place.  I changed 5 quarts of ATF in my Bronco 14 in about 5 minutes without making a mess.  This will also work with 10-w30/40 motor oil or even thick 85-90w or 140w gear lube.

Dave, what atf do you use? my 1977 c160 hydro looks to have atf in it pinkish red color.

Valvoline Dex/Merc.  Walmart has a 1 gal jug for $14...then I got 2 quarts more.  Advance Auto has same stuff, but at $26 a gallon.

That is a great idea.  Where do you find 90-140W API GL5?  I cannot seem to find it for my 77 B-100.  Should I consider using ATF?

And, can anyone tell me why there is a dipstick (as shown in the pic) a drain on the lower side AND a drain plug in the bottom of the trans?  Someone told me you only fill it to the point it comes out the drain plug on the side but, since my dipstick is hidden under the body panels and hard to get to, why wouldn't I just add using the side drain hole?

This was posted in that other thread you responded to There seems to be some conflicting information. 

 

I don't ever even remove the fill plug anymore. Wheel Horse had quite a few inaccuracies in their early manuals. My favorite is "depress the clutch/brake pedal halfway to shift while in motion". Goodbye 3523 gear. Fill until it flows out the fill plug is likely another one. Look at all the later charts and you'll see that they state 1 1/2 quarts in a 3 or 4 speed and 2 quarts in a 6 or 8 speed. That's exactly what I have done for years. Some have a dipstick like my 76 has, Exactly 2 quarts puts it dead on the full mark. That makes it about 1" above the fill plug.
