Axle PARTS for Bronco 14 model 1-0423

Recommended Posts

1) Axle SEAL.  The axle is 1.125"  (1 -1/8") for the ID...What is the seal OD so I can procure one locally.????

2) Axle HUB repair.  The broached keyway slot sharp edges are slightly chipped.  Can JB Weld reliably repair this????

3) Woodruff half-moon KEY is also slightly chipped...same question for JB Weld repair...will it hold up?

4) Axle Woodruff key SLOT appears good...sharp edges and no chips.

Any and all answers would be helpful.

One of the things that comes to mind is, what are you using this tractor for? If it's a show cruiser or something that won't be put under a lot of stress such as mowing a flat lawn my idea of a repair would be different than something I might use on my own Super Rocky hillside for towing heavy loads.

If it's going to be well used, hard working, however you want to say it... The ONLY way I'd put that back together is with two new later model HD hubs with double set screws.

I've had good luck with JB weld or it's equivalent over the years but it's important to note I've never put it under any really high stress situations.

I would not use an axle key that I had ANY doubt in. They are too easily obtained either online or locally to take a chance on putting back together with iffy parts.

IIFF the tractor is going to be lightly used:

The hub itself if otherwise solid I think I'd take a chance on using JB weld but only if I took the time to add a second set screw and it's corresponding small flat on the axle.

Looks like Garry has the size covered

2) Axle HUB repair.  The broached keyway slot sharp edges are slightly chipped.  Can JB Weld reliably repair this????

If it doesn't have two set screws, I would add the second one and use it as is.

3) Woodruff half-moon KEY is also slightly chipped...same question for JB Weld repair...will it hold up?

Replace it with a new one

4) Axle Woodruff key SLOT appears good...sharp edges and no chips.

Any and all answers would be helpful.

1.

2. I you are going to use this tractor as a worker, I would suggest getting a new key way broached into the hub. @WHX24 offers this service for a fair price.

3. Throw the key away and install a new one.

4. If the axle looks good, run it.

A new keyway can be put in fairly easy and use a new #15 woodruff. Second set screw is not the worst idea but will happen automatically if the hub needs to be broached. Of all the uses for JB weld this area is not one of them.

The axle SEAL doesn't drip...just kinda weeps and the external area is wet. Probably will get new seal.

This Bronco 14 is my grass cutter...about 1.5 acres weekly.  Lawn is not flat...rather hilly, but not mountainous.

I failed to mention that this IS the HD hub...with a 2nd set-screw tapped.

I'm opting for NEW woodruff key with JB Weld. I will also use OEM set-screw and jam nuts, in place of the 3/8 bolts (& jam nuts).

Thanx to all you guys for the PARTS help, and direction too.

If you have a machine shop close by, I'd have a regular flat key cut into the axle and hub. Once the factory keyway is compromised, there will be more and more wobble and wear over time. Most machine shops will cut a keyway in the axle for pretty cheap- and it's stronger than the day it was manufactured.

Very good idea and we still can't figure out why that wasn't done at the factory. Problem is now the to do it the cases have to get split. That can be a project on a hydro.

(1) Pics of HD Hub 105763 with chipped keyway SLOT in bore.

(2) Pic of OEM half-moon KEY ...2 faces of it.  (getting new one in the am)

(3) The keyway SLOT cut into axle SHAFT is slightly wallowed out.  I'm considering using .0010 (or .0020)  SHIM STOCK to fill gap on either side of slot. Then, with ball-peen hammer, drive woodruff key into that slot...pinching the shim stock and making the key TIGHT in the slot, with equal thickness shim stock on each side to keep it center.

Any COMMENTS on bullet point 3 are welcomed...
