See the tag hanging off the steering wheel…kinda makes me think it’s at an auction. Would be so cool to own that one :handgestures-thumbupright:

I was thinking the same, with all the outdoor equipment stacked up, and a bull near the barn.

I saw the same tractor. I like the use of the transaxle for the transfer. I had wondered a few times about using the WH 8 speed for something like this.

@Oldskool So that’s like a vertical shaft peerless rear end or the like?  I thought that would be a fun rock buggy back in high school, then Fred and Dave on “Dirt Every Day” did it with a RAV4 if I recall.

Yup. Looks like a Peerless.  Last one I had apart was lubed with grease.  Hope this one is too, being mounted 90 degrees away from what they normally are.

Yes I would say it is. Nice concept but could have picked a stronger unit. There are different grades to those Perless trans. That's not the best one. Although you can shift it without stopping for a gear change.

The Rav 4 sounds interesting. I will have to find that.

@8ntruck grease would be best in that situation. Although I have found grease gets slung away from the gears and seems to leave a void.

Is one end of the Peerless transaxle locked down? If yes, that would double the output RPMs on the free end, right, and the differential/pinon gears would be spinning all the time in ways not designed for.

Wonder how much power that thing can actually deliver to the wheels through the hydro and how long it would last?

I think it is locked on one end. I think that is a standard trans 5 or 6 speed probably. It may last longer than you think. Cheap and easy to find a replacement though. I probably would have run each axle shaft to the corresponding drive axle and flipped one if necessary to have the correct rotation. That's just me though 😄

Ah, so its geared. Yes, then much higher capacity and probably longer life (assuming, as noted earlier, the lube system works when 90º from its design orientation--the dipstick must be sticking out sideways under the vehicle--and the pinon gears in the differential don't wear out )

Your idea of using both axles makes a lot more sense--one for the front and one for the rear (and if posi-traction in the peerless, even better). But it seems here the goal was mainly to reduce the RPMs and get to the input side of the running gear transfer case.
