squonk 41,118 #4 Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) My son lives in a nice suburb of Buffalo.Nice house tiny yard. The neighbors are RIGHT ON TOP OF YOU. If the guy next door goes out to grill, you can tell the last time he got his teeth cleaned. In this type of environment, no gas powered Eq. makes sense. Got him a Stihl cordless mower for a house warming present. He can go out any time of day and mow without bothering anyone. One problem. This is in the Lake Effect Snow Belt. Would take a lot of batteries to do his driveway. Can't wait to go there with my Ariens Tecky powered blower! Edited June 19, 2021 by squonk 3

953 nut 55,229 #9 Posted June 19, 2021 Out of respect for others I don't mow, weed-eat or blow leaves on Sunday or after 5:00 pm other days. No legislation was needed, just common curtesy. I have been using an electric leaf blower for years and it is so loud that you can't tell if there is an engine powering it or not. I decided to go electric because those little two cycle engines were giving me too many problems. I got the biggest one Craftsman offered about twenty years ago and it is going strong. Until I read the article I was unaware that only GAS powered equipment could be capable of blasting air up to 280 miles per hour, eroding topsoil and sending pollen, fertilizers, and herbicides adrift. Thank you Audubon Society for enlightening me. Beyond that, gas-powered lawn care of all kinds spews pollutants linked to cancers, heart disease, and asthma, and blowers blast air up to 280 miles per hour, eroding topsoil and sending pollen, fertilizers, and herbicides adrift. Workers who spend hours a day with equipment are most at risk

WHNJ701 4,165 #11 Posted June 19, 2021 This is already happening in parts of nj. I also believe 2 stroke engines are banned in most of California too along with many other things. I get the noise issues. I have a bozo old retired neighbor that will blow leaves every single day in October/November for 2 to 4 hours. Yes it's annoying. I have no issues with homeowners switching to battery lawn maintenance equipment, the reality is it's coming whether you like it or not. I have over 5 acres and switched to a battery weedwacker a few years ago. It's the greatest thing ever built. Throwing my old commercial grade echo into the dumpster was a great day. No more mixing gas, fighting to start it, no noise, no stink. Now it's just the pull the trigger. Last night watching baseball, saw Stihl having commercials for there battery line of saws. The auto industry will be forcing us to go electric by the mid 2030s. I saw ford is building the new "Maverick" truck. I heard the V8 is being phased out. It's interesting though the new 4 cyl turbo mustangs have more hp than most of the stock gt 90s ones with the V8s. I read some where the next round of cash for clunkers is being proposed again. They won't be banning the gas engine. They will price you out of it so you can't afford to maintain or run it. When your CJ8 spark plugs are 25 bucks a piece and gas is 6 bucks a gallon. Or even stop selling the maintenance parts forcing you to switch. 1
WHNJ701 4,165 #12 Posted June 19, 2021 Funny thing too alot of the big house developments, these people that whine are the same people that when the power goes out the big whole house generators kick on. Talk about noise during a power outage. Nights out here all you hear are hundreds on generators running 2

Across the street lived my boss. The power would go out there all the time. Old Bill would fire up that generator and turn every light on in the house. Then would sit in the window and read the paper just to piss off my boss! It was pretty comical the next day!
SylvanLakeWH 25,558 #14 Posted June 19, 2021 My 25 year old toro bit the bullet this year. Went with a Dewalt unit. Very impressed. Quiet as a mouse. I cut three small lawns each time and use maybe 25% battery… uses 2 of the same dewalt batteries as their power tools… slick. Gotta admit it is nice not messing with gas, oil etc.
Pullstart 62,879 #15 Posted June 19, 2021 I think I’ll scrap all my tractors before their value tanks too much further. A couple goats and pigs could easily replace lawn duty, garden duty and ride time. A sheep once threw me into an electric fence at a buddy’s house. That could be my new buggy so I might as well toss that too. Video games and virtual reality are better for the environment anyway so I might as well grab some more of those.
roadapples 6,983 #16 Posted June 19, 2021 I don't mind mowers and blowers etc. What bugs me are the 4 wheelers for hours on end. You'd think they already outlawed bicycles..... 1 2

squonk 41,118 #18 Posted June 19, 2021 There's a guy down the street that runs his gas powered RC race cars up and down the street all day and night. It rattles the fillings in your teeth! As batteries increase in practical usability then so too will zero emission heavy trucks. But.... There in lies another several issues combined. Power plants in many places are not even close to being capable of producing or transporting the incredible amount of demand that even a partial fleet of the nations trucks as electric, could use. 2
formariz 11,987 #24 Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) I have and use a leaf blower but do use it as few times possible and I am also very careful as to where how and when I use it. Having always lived in a suburban area exposed to others maintaining their lawns and properties wether through a professional landscaper or doing it themselves, I do have to agree that specifically leaf blowers should be outlawed. The problem is not essentially the actual machine but the individuals using them. Not only there is no common sense used but worse than that there is an outright lack of manners and consideration for others specially by landscapers but not limited to them. They will use those things blowing actual dirt even next and toward ones house covering everything with dust. When I hear them arrive for neighbors property the first thing I do is close all windows and stand outside watching them. I had numerous serious arguments with them over their actions . Their interest is only to make their money as easily and as quickly as possible without any consideration for anybody’s welfare. Even their own health is constantly endangered by what they do. Their ignorance and disregard for others and themselves just astonishes me each time I see them. Contributing to that is the fact that since property owners are never home when they come, they have free reign to do whatever they want. Then on others side of me I have a neighbor that insists on running the damn thing with the choke on because he insists it runs better. One can smell him from the top of street when driving home. I cannot understand how he himself stands it. I think that in general stupidity is overtaking the human kind. Sure machinery contributes to problems but that is not the biggest problem specifically in this case. We seem to always avoid tackling the real immediate problem choosing instead to many times conveniently ignore them. c-series don 8,707 #25 Posted June 19, 2021 In the estate section of the town where I live gas powered leaf blowers have been outlawed. Since it’s been enacted things have been much quieter. When a landscaping crew shows up and run 4-5 at a time it’s extremely loud. They leave and another crew shows up to do another property and it never ends. I don’t live in the estate section but many of my neighbors have landscapers. Just the other day (now remember this is basically summer and there’s no leaves on the ground) my neighbors landscapers had four guys with backpack blowers going for almost two hours. The property is maybe a third of an acre! I was VERY CLOSE to going over there and saying WTF? I own a handheld gas blower and a gas backpack. I always try to be considerate and use them as little as possible. Funny but I think those walk behind 5-8hp blowers are quieter. I have one of those too but only use it in the fall when the leaves are thick. One other thing since I’m on a rant! I talked to a guy from the power company and he said if we switched to electric vehicles tomorrow it would collapse the grid because it simply cannot handle that kind of load.
