C175 Engines

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I met up with a fellow member here today.  He has two C175's, one of which had its engine replaced with a gray Kohler Series 2 short block.  Is there anyway to tell if it was replaced with the correct, Wheel Horse spec, short block?  It's currently missing the engine tins.  Is there a number somewhere on the block that would identify it as being a Wheel Horse spec engine with the proper thrust bearing.  Thanks. Bill

I was afraid of that.  Any chance the replacement engines came with thrust bearings whether the application required them or not?  That would make them a more universal fit.  Bill

The the spec number for the service engine in my C175 was produced for WH.

You might find your answer in the manuals section.  There are several entries for Kohler engines there:

I'm loving my Series I  KT17 on my C175!

From everything I read the KT 17 Series 1 is fine unless you have a hilly yard, then they blow up from lack of oil on the main rod bearings.

First issue: Nothing is stamped on the block. If your concern is the thrust bearing; install an electric PTO.
It’s very easy to do.

Second issue: My own personal choice would be a series 1 over a predator any day.
You have to watch yourself with a series one. Keep the oil clean, keep the crankcase full and watch the angles you take the tractor.
Ive seen series one engines last as long as series 2 or m18’s.
you have to understand it’s limits.
All the best.

To put some context behind that fun video above, Kohler states the KT-17 Series 1 is fine for tilts up to 30 degrees.  You should full drain it and then add the proper amount of oil to see where the proper level is on the dipstick.  Mine has an offset between the full mark on the dipstick and truly full.

to John D -- perhaps stupid question here -- but how do you know what's "truly full" - do you mean the volume of quarts the manual states even if its above the dip stick line? I'm a confused newbie??

@JohnD I'm curious about that too!

Yes, "truly full' is the 1.75 quarts stated in the manual for my KT-17 Series I.

That goes for the Eaton 1100 transmission on the C-175 too.  WH61-90 (somewhere on this site) shows how the dipstick is off in the transmission too.

Hi John, but how do you know when you drain it that you've gotten ALL of the old oil out?

What if there's say a cup of the old oil still in the engine?

I believe this is especially true of the tranny.  When you pull the plug on that, you're not draining the hoses or the lift cylinder.  If you put in the 1.75 qts, I think you would be over filling it.

Hi Guys, has anyone put the 3/4 inch Thrust steering bearings on your Wheel Horse Tractors. I recently did an install for a customer on a John Deere and i have to admit was easy to do and no mods required. My biggest concern will the thrust bearing fit and the will stock top clip fit back on with no mods . Thanks
