Moving Day

Must have cost a small ransom the hydro crew sat under the raised wires for hours before the house came along.

can you imagine how annoying it has to be to be stuck in traffic behind a house?

Cool stuff.

Maybe 40 years ago now I watched a house being moved from Athol Massachusetts to Petersham Massachusetts.

Went out Route 32.

It was a 2 story house so obviously every wire had to be removed and reinstalled.

I seem to remember there was an overpass that required a route out a couple on/off ramps.

VERY interesting....

Having worked for Ma Bell for 35 years, I have been involved in a few house moves.  The moves are well planned and the roads involved are usually closed to regular traffic.  It is not unusual, as a utility worker, to sit waiting for one or more days waiting for the house to pass.  The contractor foots the bill and I am sure it is passed to the new house buyer...unless, the house is being moved to make room for a new road, accelerator ring, airport runway or other such government related activity.  If you ever get the chance to watch a crew jack up a house and slide timbers underneath and then finally get some wheels under there, it is well worth watching the process.  I got to watch one where they actually built a bridge across a creek to get the house across.  It saved going out on the hi-way and shutting down traffic and having wires lowered.  Interesting stuff for sure.  :occasion-xmas:

There were some posts that smelled like Spam, thankfully they were removed.  Just wanted to say that so the thread makes sense.

My dad served in WW2 and Spam in a can served a real purpose since it was preserved in a can, was a source of protein and fat and could be eaten right from the can.  He said that the soldiers described it as ham that didn’t pass inspection.  Some of the senior members here likely know that, but it is a tidbit to pass to the next generation.

If it wasn't for the Brits, Spam would be hard to find.  :UK:  :banana-linedance:

I’m sure that a lot of you enjoy ham, green beans and potatoes cooked together, so just once try using Spam instead of ham.  You might like it since there is much more flavor, but don’t tell your cardiologist.

Moving day can be quite an adventure! It sounds like the hydro crew had quite the wait with the raised wires. You should hire a professional man and van in London, it could be a great option to ensure a smooth and efficient move. Wishing you all the best in settling into your new home!
