wheel horse 310-8

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just bought a wheel horse 310-8 that runs like it was brand new with 1099 hours on it and everything works, and was wondering if I got a good deal on it or if I over paid($360)

310-8 is a good solid tractor. That 37 inch deck is narrow, but has a really nice cut to it- far better than the 42. It is a high lift design, and distributes clippings very well.

And that 10hp Kohler has far more power that the horsepower rating would lead you to think.

Don't know a lot about that model of :wh:

But....

Tractor and deck for that money sounds like a good deal to me.

Any tractor that runs good with a deck is worth at least $695 all day long.

Let me think about this one, :confusion-confused:  you paid about 1/3 the price of the junk mowers at a big box store and got twice the machine    :confusion-scratchheadyellow:    I think you did just fine!

@johnnyrocket,  agree with others on the good deal . would concentrate on a thorough BASELINE MAINTIANCE  CHECK , change all fluids , trans oil change , engine oil , all grease fittings , detail check  every electrical connection , drop that deck , thoroughly clean the under side , oil spray it down and let it dry out in the hot sun , to suck un the oils and kill off the grunge . small file sharpen the blades . check out the mule drive belt and deck belt , probably replace . lubricate anything that's rusty . verify operational function first , than get after paint and other related areas , seat , shift boot . for the price you paid , you are way ahead , verify what you have . rotella 30 wt oil , is very good in that . good luck . pete

:text-yeahthat:First thing go to the manual section here and download the owners and parts manual for that tractor and deck, easiest and best thing you will do for you and the tractor and it"s free:handgestures-thumbupright: . The deck is a 37" side discharge depending on the year it may have the funky 6 sided belt, you need to know the proper way it installing it if you remove the deck, again the manual is your best friend. If you remove the deck check around all four places where the cradle,( the thing that's bolted to the deck that's used to mount the deck to the tractor) are bolted to the deck. Those mounting points can develop cracks where they bolt to the deck especially the front right one (sitting on the tractor) if not properly repaired they will only get worse, are at least make the deck cut uneven:snooty:. Also you done good :handgestures-thumbupright:.

the guy did change the engine oil and the trans oil and he sharpened the blades as well and it has all of the original wiring and all of the safeties. Also it even has the original paint on the underside of the mower deck

also this afternoon while I was mowing with my 310-8 the engine started to act like it was being overloaded when I was mowing grass that wasn't that tall and it should have been able to handle it but it didn't. is this a sign that the fuel pump might be on it's way out?

at first I thought that the engine oil might be low but after checking it had plenty of oil

at the time the engine was acting overloaded, I had the deck lowered low because my dad likes the grass cut really low. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not

also I was wondering does the oil sentry shut the motor off when the oil level is to low?:eusa-think:

I don't know whether or not to trust that or not:unsure:

I wouldn't wait until the oil sentry shut the engine down. What's wrong with pulling the dip stick out before you start mowing?I add oil to all my machinery even if it's down a cup full.Just  good operating practice.

I generally check it before I start it but it is really hard to tell what level the oil is at because it is brand new oil and that stuff is clear.

Post the numbers off the decal. If unreadable post all the numbers of the engine including the serial number.

It is at least 1990 or newer.

The low oil switch prevents the starter from working if the oil is low provided it is working. There is a 500 hour service interval and special instructions to remove and clean the magnet without damaging the switch.
